solutions, based on X-ray image intensifiers (XRII)
and cameras, or Pixium digital flat-panel detectors.
Thales has the technologies and high-performance
components needed for all types of radiology
systems, even the most sophisticated. In fact,
Thales is used in over half of all X-ray images taken
every day around the world.

Our area of expertise is the “image chain” which is
at the heart of all X-ray systems. In addition to the
basic detection of X-rays, Thales solutions ensure
preprocessing of the initial X-ray image. Through
imaging solutions based on digital technology, we

At Thales, we never forget that radiology is ultimately
for the patient, so we constantly strive to reduce radia-
tion exposure. We have the same top priority as our
customers, namely top-quality images. All parameters
(DQE, resolution and contrast) are optimized,
measured and tested, to deliver the most accurate
possible information to practitioners, whether for
diagnosis or interventional procedures.
Thales detectors are integrated into most types of
radiology systems, on tables used for RF, angiography,
urology or skeletal exams, as well as mobile surgical
units, panoramic X-rays, etc.
Radiological imaging unit solutions
The imaging function itself is handled by the
radiological imaging unit (RIU), which comprises
three main components: an X-ray image
intensifier (XRII), which converts X-rays into
visible light, an optical system to focus the light,
and a CCD camera, which converts this light
into a digital signal. Thales groups these
components in a layout designed to enhance
overall performance.
Real-time image processing
The optics integrated in the RIU help ensure
a uniform image, but it’s the camera that
generates a preprocessed digital image.
The camera includes real-time image processing
functions such as correction of geometrical
distortion, reinforcement of contours and last
image hold. It also has a rotation function,
enabling practitioners to rotate the image for
the best possible angles.

Pixium detector solutions
The Pixium RF 4343, primarily intended for
remote-controlled tables, is a large-format digital
flat-panel detector. It generates excellent quality Pixium RF 4343
images, up to 30/second in fluoroscopy mode,
and is used in radiography mode as well. The Pixium RF 4343 is the first multipurpose,
large-format, real-time digital imaging solution.
It handles the image function in all-digital equipment, It is already in service worldwide, facilitating the
making practitioners’ work easier and enhancing work of technicians for various exams.

The Pixium RF 4343 features Trixell technology
(Pixium® CsI coupled with photodiode arrays),

The detector is used in conjunction with a
processing unit that handles image acquisition,
calibration and formatting, and generates a digital
image in real time.

9-inch radiological imaging unit
The ideal size for mobile systems, 9-inch radiological
imaging units are widely used in interventional
procedures. This RIU offers a number of functions,
for example allowing surgeons to rotate the X-ray
Flat-panel detector image on their screen in real time.

Solutions to simplify installation and handling
The detector is designed for installation in a table.
Because of its ultra-flat design, it facilitates
movement of the table, which can tilt without
restrictions and go closer to the ground to enhance
access for patients with limited mobility.
No matter whether it is being used in radiography or
fluoroscopy mode, images are displayed immediately,
so that doctors no longer have to handle any type of
cassette.
