Words like loyalty, duty, respect, service, honor, integrity, and courage are

thrown around often these days, but military service actually gives these words
meaning.

These core values are ingrained in each soldier’s mind during Basic Combat
Training. From there, soldiers learn how to implement these values in their
daily lives. I choose to speak about 3 of army values.

The first one is duty. Duty means to Fulfill Your Obligations but Duty
extends beyond law, regulation, and orders. Professionals consistently strive to do
their best. Conscientiousness is a human trait that internalizes duty. Conscientious
soldiers have a sense of responsibility for personal contributions to the Army,
demonstrated through dedicated effort, organization, thoroughness, reliability, and
practicality.

The second one is Selfless Service and means Put the Welfare of the
Nation, the Army and Your Subordinates Before Your Own
People often refer to the military as “the Service.” Selfless service means doing what is right
for the nation, the Army, the organization, and subordinates. While the needs of the Army
and the nation should come first, it does not imply leaders should neglect their Families or
themselves. To the contrary, such neglect weakens a leader and can cause the Army more
harm than good.

The third One is Personal Courage and imply to Face Fear, Danger, or
Adversity
Personal courage is not the absence of fear. It is the ability to put fear aside and do what is
necessary. Personal courage takes two forms: physical and moral. Effective leaders
demonstrate both. Physical courage requires overcoming fears of bodily harm and doing
one’s duty. It triggers bravery that allows a Soldier to take risks in combat in spite of the fear
of wounds or even death.
Moral courage is the willingness to stand firm on values, principles, and convictions. It
enables all leaders to stand up for what they believe is right, regardless of the
consequences. Leaders, who take full responsibility for their decisions and actions even
when things go wrong, display moral courage.

To exemplify these values as well as I can I will talk about an act of heroism of the
Romanian army from the First World War, the Charge of Prunaru. In this battle
that went to liberate Bucharest from the German siege in November 1916, a
Romanian cavalry regiment managed to defeat a German mountain battalion
equipped with machine guns. As a result of the battle, from 300 soldiers of the
Romanian regiment died 216. In my opinion, these soldiers best demonstrated
these values by doing their duty, facing a technologically superior opponent and
putting the mission above their lives.
To sum up the values of the army are what make the military structure unique. The
fact that these are not simple words give the strength of the organization and the
confidence of the civilian population.
