1. CFTA

* Central American Free Trade Agreement

Following the success of the North American Free Trade


Agreement in the late 1990's, more trade agreements
with various countries were established. Negotiations of
the CAFTA agreement started in 2003 and was
originally designed to include Costa Rica, El Salvador,
Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The Dominican
Republic was added later and since 2004 the agreement
has formally been known as CAFTA-DR. It was the first
agreement of its kind for the United States and other
developing economies.
The purpose of the agreement was to increase and
promote bilateral trade within these regions, and has
been quite successful for all countries involved. Since
the agreement's ratification in 2005, trade between the
member countries has almost doubled to $60 billion in
2013.
2. ASEAN
ASEAN was created on August 8, 1967, in Bangkok,
Thailand. It was founded by Indonesia, Malaysia,
Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. On December 15,
2008, ASEAN approved a new charter, giving the
organization status as a legal entity. All member

later, 12 Asia-Pacific economies met in Canberra,
Australia, to establish APEC. The founding members
were Australia; Brunei Darussalam; Canada; Indonesia;
Japan; Korea; Malaysia; New Zealand; the Philippines;
Singapore; Thailand; and the United States.

China; Hong Kong, China; and Chinese Taipei joined in


1991. Mexico and Papua New Guinea followed in 1993.
Chile acceded in 1994. And in 1998, Peru; Russia; and
Viet Nam joined, taking the full membership to 21.

Between 1989 and 1992, APEC met as an informal


senior official- and ministerial-level dialogue. In 1993,
former US President Bill Clinton established the practice
of an annual APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting to
provide greater strategic vision and direction for
cooperation in the region.
