Lesson 1
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:

Add and subtract decimals and mixed decimals

through ten thousandths without and with regrouping.
Introduction:
Addition and subtraction of decimals is similar to addition and subtraction of
whole numbers. Always start at the rightmost digit towards left. But then, in adding
and subtracting decimals, make sure that all the decimal points are aligned and
zero/s may be used as place holder/s so that all addends (in addition), minuend and
subtrahend (in subtraction) will have the same number of digits to avoid confusion
when performing operations.

LESSON PROPER

We use decimals in our daily life. Decimals can be found in the price of every
commodity- things we buy in each and every store; all unit of measures like distance,
weight, mass, and capacity; and in writing money when we deal with centavos.

What’s In

Read, understand then give the correct answer in each of the following:

1. What do we call the numbers that we add or numbers to be added?

A. Addends B. Sum C. Factors D. Product
2. The answer in addition is called ______.
A. Quotient B. Product C. Difference D. Sum
3. The number from where we subtract is called _______.
A. Minuend B. Subtrahend C. Difference D. Product

3
Grade 6

4. The number that is to be subtracted is called ________.

A. Minuend B. Sum C. Subtrahend D. Factors
5. The answer in subtraction is called ________.

chores at home. While she was cleaning her room, she found four pieces of ribbons
that measure 0.5345m, 0.5672m, 0.763m and 1.003m respectively. How long will be
the ribbons when put end to end?

• How do you describe Kimberly as a daughter?

• Is it necessary for a daughter to help in doing household chores? Why?

What is It

Here’s how we solve the problem:

1. Write the decimal

5. Subtract 5.12 from the difference of 10 and 1.8903.

Lesson 2
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to:

• Solve 1 or more steps routine and non-routine

problems involving addition and/or subtraction of
decimals and mixed decimals using appropriate
problem solving strategies and tools.

What’s In:
Routine problem solving involves the use of at least one of the four
arithmetic operations and/or ratio to solve problems that are practical in nature while
non-routine problem solving (also referred to as creative problem solving)
requires some degree of creativity or originality. Non-routine problems typically
do not have an immediately apparent strategy for solving them. Often times,
these problems can be solved in multiple ways and with a variety of strategies.
Steps introduced by POLYA can be of great help in solving routine problems.
Whereas, non-routine problems may use any of the different problem solving
strategies such as working backwards, creating a diagram, block model approach,
trial and error or guess and check, logical reasoning, finding a pattern, using a table
or making a list, acting it out, or solving a simpler problem, writing a number
sentence, using real or concrete objects or using Problem Solving Maps or PSM.

What’s New (communication, character building

and critical thinking)

Problem #1: Routine Problem

Albert wants to buy a polo shirt for Php799.75 and a pair of pants for
Php1 537.95 as presents for his father’s birthday . How much is his change if
he gives three thousand pesos to the cashier?

What can you say about Albert?

What is it

We can solve the problem by following a step-by-step process:

1. Understand • Find the amount of change Albert will

*know what is asked – receive from three thousand pesos

Php799.75 cost of polo shirt
*identify the relevant facts or Php1 537.95 cost of pair of pants
information Php3 000.00 to be given to the
cashier

*identify the hidden fact • the total cost of polo shirt and a pair
of pants
2. Plan
• addition and subtraction
*determine the operations to
be used
• Php799.75 + 1 537.95 = n
*write the mathematical
sentence for the hidden
question • 3 000.00 – (799.75 + 1 537.95) = n
*write the mathematical
sentence for the whole
problem
• 3 000.00 – (799.75 + 1 537.95) = n
3. Carry out 3 000.00 – 2 337.70 = n
*solve
662.30 = n

• Php662.30-amount of change
Albert will receive from the cashier
*final answer

• Php2 337.70 – cost of poloshirt &

4. Look back + Php 662.30 – amount of change

correct and sensible
cashier

Problem #2: Non-Routine Problem (communication and character building)

Nely’s family consumes 17.5 kilograms of rice per month, while Eden’s
family consume 1.75 kilograms more than Nely’s family per month. How many
kilograms of rice will they buy altogether for a month?

• How would you compare the two families in terms of number family
members?
• Which do you think is better, less or more family members? Why?
2a. Let us solve the problem using representations(variables) in a number
sentence.
Nely’s family n = 17.5 kg
Eden’s family e = n + 1.75 kg
(monthly consumption of the 2 families) x=n+e
Now, let’s substitute:
x= n + e
x= n + n + 1.75
x = 17.5 + 17.5 + 1.75
x = 36.75
Answer: 36.75 kg of rice
2b. We can also use block model approach: (creativity)
Nely’s family 17.5 kg

Eden’s family 17.5 kg + 1.75 kg

Since the question uses the word “altogether” then we add 17.5 + 17.5 + 1.75

Answer: 36.75 kg of rice

answer. Use any method.

some money from his daily allowance. The cost of the
bicycle that he wanted the most is Php3 250.75. If he has

to buy the bicycle?
2. Carl and Gab love to fly kites during summer. Carl used
