Subject and Grade Level: Literature 7 Term One


Unit Topic: Understanding the Different Kinds of Irony
Ideas and Values: Irony
Text: Various Disney movie scenes

Pre-seminar Content:
Warm-up Activity:
 The class will recall the short stories that have been tackled during the term that uses irony as a literary device. They will need
to identify the differences, if any, in the usage of irony between the mentioned short stories. The teacher will have a short
discussion exploring the contexts of the ironies in the texts.

Background information:
 Watch movie scenes from Disney films: “Finding Nemo,” “Monsters Inc.,” “Toy Story,” and “Aladdin”

Pre-seminar Process:
The PAIDEA Seminar is a dialogue, where students share their ideas. The main purpose of this seminar is to understand the text, the
values that come with it, and the new ideas that the text presents.

Name Tents: Make name tents: Even if we all know each other; it is good to have name tents to be more aware of those who are part of
this discussion.

Roles and Expectations: As the facilitator, my role is to ask questions and make sure that the seminar goes smoothly. I will be taking
notes to keep up with talk turns and flow of ideas. As participants, I ask you to think, listen and clearly share your thoughts and ideas.
You need to raise your hand in order to speak and please do not make any unnecessary movements and noise.

Goal Setting:
Personal goal: Consider the list of personal goals that I will dictate. Choose a goal that is a particular challenge for you and put a
check on the blank before that goal.
Group Goal: Focus on the ideas and values in the text.

Seminar:
A. Opening question/s:
a. Did you notice these ironies when you first watched these movies?
b. What were the ironies shown in the movie clips?

B. Core question/s:
a. Are these ironies all the same? Why or why not? How?
b. Which clips show the same kind of irony when compared to the short stories discussed in class? How are they similar?
c. How would these movies be without the irony?

C. Closing question/s:
a. What other movies have you watched that uses irony?
b. What do you think is the importance of irony in movies (and in literature)?

Post-seminar process:
Thank you for your active participation in our seminar. On a scale of 1-5 grade yourselves on how well you met your personal goals.

Post-seminar Content:
On a short bond paper, the students will list down the different ironies they experience in their day-to-day lives for one week. They
will need to identify the specific type of irony and briefly explain the contexts of each experience that makes it an irony. After the list,
the students will write a short reflection on the importance of irony outside of literature.
