The Gambia's exclusive fishing zone extends 200 nautical miles to the
West but is only 30 nm wide from North to South. The Gambia's shelf area is
3,855 sq. km, which represent about 14 % of the total shelf area of Senegal
and The Gambia. Figure 1 shows the isobaths of the Gambian continental shelf
and slope.

1.1 Climate
The country falls within the sub-tropical zone of West Africa (the Sahara
belt). It is characterized by two distinct seasons, the rainy (hot season) and
the dry season (prevailed by the North westerly dry winds or harmattan). The
rainy season extends from June to October and the dry season from November to
May. Weather condi tions are very humid during the rainy season wi th the prevai-
ling Sahelian type of climate, the country has been experiencing annual varia-
tions i n the amount of proc ipi tation due to the severity of' the dt-oiìgh t condt tionr
Between 1975 and 1985, the annual rainfall oscillated within a range of
300 and 1,200 mm. The average annual precipitation recorded for this period was
of the order of 766 mm. The peak of the rainy season is in August, hut this
changes occasionally with peaks in July or September. Precipitation figures for
the period 1975-1985 are presented in Table 1.
1,2 Hydrography
The waters off West-Africa belong to the richest fishing grounds in the
world. This is due to the occurrence of permanent upwelling (caused by tradewinds),
which gives rise to high primary productivity and hence rich fisheries resources
(Ansa-Emmim, 1982). In Cambian waters, upwelling of cold waters coincides with
the cold season (November-May-June). The lowest temperatures of the surface water
along the coast were recorded in January and,Fehruary (see Figt.mrc 2): 20.1° C in
J amivary 1974, 21 . 1 ° C in Fùhruary 1975. In May-June the i n tens i ty of the upwe ii ing
dccl ines and the rich cold waters are replaced by the warm waters of the equa to-
rial countercurrent. The centre of the upwelling moves up to the North during
this period , moving down to the South again in November/December During the
.
warm season the surface tempera turo nl ong the coas t reaches i to max i mum in
September or October (28.1° C in September 1974 and 28.6° C in October 1975),
The maximum salinity along the coast is observed in June (around 37 ppt)
while the minimum salinity depends mainly on the amount of freshwater discharge
by the river. Minimum salinity is usually recorded in October as shown in F.igure 2.
In the period 1973-1975 the lowest salinity in October varied between 31.4 and
24.5 ppt.
During the low water period from January to June saline water penetrates
very deep inland (t'he 1 ppt salinity boundary is found up to 300 km upstream),
while in the rainy season the brackish water retreat to the sea (then the 1 ppt.
salinity boundary is found about 80 km from the mouth of the river).
Domain (1976) studied the continental shelves of Senegal. and The Gambia.
The bottom types found in the waters of The Gambia are presented in Figure 4.
Domain distinguished two types of bottom: the trawlable, (which consists of sand,
sandy mud, mud or muddy sand) and untrawlable,
1.4 Population
Apart from agriculture, artisanal fishing has been the occupation for
the rinjority of the rural population in vil] ages along the marine coast and those
bordering the river banks. On the average the per caput consumption of fish is
estimated at approximately 21.4 kg in the urban areas and approximately 18.0 kg ir
the rural areas.
Since the river and marine area are natural resources, rich in various
stocks of fish species, a diversification of agriculture to fisheries has been
of priority in the Government's 5-year National Development Plan to counter the
repercussions of the drought arid also achieve her main objectives, such as in-
creasing the yield of animal protein, since fish is an inexpensive source of
protein, as compared to other animal protein.
In 1966 there were about 155 canoes fishing in The Gambia, about half of
them were owned by senegalese fishermen The total number of fishermen was about
800. Most of the Gambian fishermen fish seasonally. The fishing gears used in the
artisanal, fishery are cas t-nets, gi li-ne ts, hooks and I ines and beach seines. Nos t.
of the fish caught is for local consumption and is sold by "Banabanas" (middlemen)
These middlemen transport the fish by bicycle, small mo tor-b ike (Sciieffers and
Sagna, 1970). Currently, taxis are also used.
For fisheries purposes the country is stratified into the marine or
Atlantic coast, lower and upper river. Along the 70 km coas tu ne eleven fish ing
villages were identified during the 1984 frame survey and 80 fishing villages were
enumerated in the lower river or estuarine area, whil e in 1985, 90 vi.1 1, ages were
recorded ( Lloyd-Evans, 1985a). In the upper river area 46 villages were observed
2,017 respectively. The foreign fishermen operating in The Gambia are predominan-
tly of Senegalese origin. In Table 3 the number of Gambian arid non-Gambian fisher-
men are suminari zed . Tab.1 e 4 presents the distribution of Cambian and foreign
fishermen in the marine and lower river strata. Along the Atlantic coast Serie-
galese fishermen predominate while Gambian nationals form the major part in the
estuarine area.
The artisanal fishermen employ two types of canoes: the dug-out and planke
dug-out. Dug-out canoes are found mainly in the estuarine areas and inland. As th
name suggests, they are obtained from the trunks of mahogany trees (Khaya serìegalenr
They are usally six meters in length, 90 cm wide and 50 cm deep. Dug-out are aiwaT
paddle operated, accomodating a maximum of 2 people. Gears utilized by these cano
include stow nets, handlines and cast-nets.
Planked dug-out canoes are bigger than the dug-out. The Keel (dug-out
part) is from the same source as that previously mentioned. 'Io increase the capa-
e i ty Lue sides are pl anked w i th timber . These canoes opera Le al ong the marine
coast and in the estuarine area. The sizes range from 7 to l'I metres length,
i to 5 metres depth and 1 to 2.5 metres width. The size variations correspond
to the gear type used by the canoe operators. Gill or set nets are operated with
canoes 1 .5 metres wide with a crew capacity of three Lo four men. Crafts, 2-2.5
metres wide, use encircling gill nets, with an eight men crew. Planked canoes
using purse seines are operated by a crew of about 14 men.
Generally, it could be said that the canoe size corresponds to the gear
type and size coupled with the labour force involved in the operation.
Since 1972, a riverine shrimp fishery exists in the Piver Gambia. The
fishery cons is ted of about 200 dug-out canoes equipped with stow nets and results
in a yearly catch of Penaeus notialis of between 200 and 300 tons (Scheffers,
1976).

side of an anchored canoe using wooden cross-beams supported by buoys. The net
is coneshaped and is kept open by two vertical stakes and the cross-beam. The
net is operated at night, at ehbtide and is lifted before the current reverses
(Van Macen, in press; Ndow, in preparation). Figure 5 presents a drawing of a
stow net. The mesh size of a stow net is of the order of 20-25 mm (stretched).
