Economic challenges are
expected to shape much of life
in Ohio as 2011 progresses.
Funding issues impact many
things, including firefighting.
One service leader thinks
departments around the state
will look at restructuring fire-
fighting in a fundamental way
to save money. Regionalization
involves departments closing,
pooling resources and serving
larger areas.
“Regionalization depends on
the area and type of department
— whether full-time or volun-
teer. There could be some cost
savings with it and overlap can
be addressed if you have one
fire department with a station
for some.
However, regionalization
is not forecasted to occur in
the Tri-County for two rea-
sons. One is distance between
departments and the other is
concern over response time.
“For Delphos, regionalizing
fire service isn’t likely to be
an issue. We are about 8-10
miles from the nearest other
department, which is American

want to protect our citizens. To
do that, we have to maintain our
own fire department. In Allen

MASON (AP) — An
Ohio man has been indicted
on charges accusing him of
photographing himself as he
sexually molested boys, and
officials say the images were
taken at an in-home daycare.
Authorities tell The
Cincinnati Enquirer the pho-
tos were taken at a daycare
operated in southwest Ohio
by the mother of 27-year-old
Andrew Keith.
The 117-count indictment
filed Wednesday in U.S.
District Court accuses Keith,
of Mason, of making sexually
explicit photos of boys in 2002
and 2003 and of sharing them
in 2008, 2009 and 2010. U.S.
attorney’s spokesman Fred
Alverson tells The Enquirer
the images were traded over
the Internet with someone in
South Carolina.
Keith is being held pend-
ing a Tuesday arraignment
and detention hearing. A mes-
sage seeking comment was
left after business hours at
the federal public defender’s
office.

of two men in the slayings
of a real estate agent out of
Youngstown because of heavy
publicity.
Attorneys for one suspect
have asked the judge to move

The suspects could face
the death penalty if convict-
ed in the Sept. 20 slaying
of 67-year-old Vivian Martin.
She was found strangled in
a burning house she had an
appointment to show.

daughter, Davida Brown, says

COLUMBUS (AP) —
Amid a national shortage of a
key execution drug, the coun-
try’s busiest death penalty
state is identifying for the first
time its supplier for all three
of its lethal injection drugs.
Texas previously fought to
shield the information, say-
ing the revelation could be
“an embarrassing fact” and
prompt the supplier to stop
shipping the drugs.
The state said releasing the
information could also put the
company’s employees in dan-
ger from death penalty oppo-
nents.
The supplier is Besse
Medical of suburban
Cincinnati. It is a large pharma-
ceutical distributor that says it
has no way to determine what
its customers, including the
Texas corrections department,
does with its products.

drug cost relief
WASHINGTON — U.S.
Department of Health and
Human Services Secretary
Kathleen Sebelius has
announced 127,159 Medicare
beneficiaries in Ohio, and
three million people nation-
wide, have received prescrip-
tion drug cost relief through
the Affordable Care Act. To
date, three million eligible
beneficiaries who fell into the
drug coverage gap known as
the “donut hole” during 2010
have been mailed a one-time,
tax-free $250 rebate check.
“For too long, many seniors
and people with disabilities
have been forced to make
impossible choices between
paying for needed prescrip-
tion medication and neces-
sities like food and rent,”
said Secretary Sebelius. “The
Affordable Care Act offers
long overdue relief by lower-
ing prescription drug costs
each year until the donut hole
is closed.”
Eligible beneficiaries who
fell into the coverage gap
during 2010 are continu-
ing to automatically receive
rebate checks. These checks
are only the first step in how
the Affordable Care Act will
reduce prescription drug costs
for beneficiaries in the donut
hole each year until it is
closed in 2020. Starting this
year, eligible beneficiaries in
the coverage gap will receive
a 50-percent discount on cov-
ered brand name medications
while in the donut hole. In
addition, in 2011 Medicare
will begin paying 7-percent
of the price for generic drugs
during the coverage gap.

eral judge’s ruling that about
150 disputed ballots should
be counted before the winner
is declared. The ballots were
excluded because they were
cast at the wrong precincts, but
the judge said they shoud be
counted because they appar-
ently were miscast because of
poll worker errors.
A three-judge panel of the
6th U.S. Court of Appeals
heard arguments Thursday
evening about the Nov. 2
election, whose results gave
Williams a 23-vote victory.
The Cincinnati Enquirer
reports that lawyers for
Democrat Tracie Hunter say
the government must inves-
tigate any mistake that could
disenfranchise voters.
“There needs to be a mean-
ingful investigation here,” said
attorney Jennifer Branch.
“Mistakes happen.
Elections aren’t perfect,” said
Dave Stevenson, attorney for
the county’s board of elec-
tions. “Mistakes just don’t rise
to a constitutional level.”
The case has potential
implications for future Ohio
elections beyond the juvenile
judge race because it raises
the question of whether state
election laws adequately pro-
tect the constitutional rights
of voters.

Panthers tear up Wildcats Jays fall in

DELPHOS — The
Jefferson Wildcats boys cag-

for the Wildcats with 6:28
left in the first. Welch scored
again at the 5:53 spot with a
jumper which gave him half
of his eight points on the
night as Paulding took the
lead for good. The Panthers
struck just 20 seconds later
when Travis Keeran stole the
ball and took it to the net
with a layup. Grant Harder
became the third Panther to
score, hitting a jumper from
the foul line for a 5-point lead
at 8-3 with 4:01 left in the
first. Jefferson fought back
when Antalis hit a jumper at
the 3:05 mark and teammate
Nick Cook put up a shot
from under the basket and
got fouled in the process. He
missed the foul shot but drew
Jefferson was within one at
8-6 at the 2:40 mark.
The rest of the quarter

Guarnaschelli hit a 3-pointer

Paulding once again struck
first in the third quarter with
Keeran heading to the line
where he made one of his
two shots at 6:49. Paulding’s
Devan Bermejo hit a reverse
layup and the resultant free
throw at 6:09. Jefferson got
its first points in the third
quarter from Dunlap — a
3-pointer from the right wing
with 5:59 left in the quar-
ter. Antalis added a 3-pointer
at 4:41, trying to rally his
team for a comeback with
the Panthers leading 36-22.
The rest of the quarter stayed
about the same with Paulding
getting a layup with five sec-
onds left to end the third
period up 41-26.
“We had a difficult time
penetrating their matchup
zone and the bottom line —
their defense was too much
for us to handle,” Smith
added.
Paulding scored again
first in the fourth — a Pease

lead to 43-26. Paulding got
four more points over the
next three minutes until
Jefferson hit back with an

ket,” Brewer added.

shots on the night, more than
his total points scored.
Paulding improves to 8-4
overall and 3-1 in the confer-
ence. They host Ayersville
tonight.
Jefferson falls to 6-6 over-
all and 1-3 in the conference.
They travel to Spencerville
next Friday.

second game in a row, St.
John’s could not hold a lead
in the fourth period.
For the second game in
a row, it came up and bit
them as the Blue Jays lost
43-40 in double-overtime to
Marion Local Friday night in
Midwest Athletic Conference

(3-7, 3-1 MAC) into a 3-way
tie atop the league.
The teams needed an extra
eight minutes to decide a rela-
tively close matchup all the
way.
In the second overtime,
tied at 39, as they did in
the first, the Flyers (5-4, 2-2
MAC) scored first as 6-7
senior Jesse Winner (8 points,
7 boards, 4 blocks) laid one in
just 45 ticks into it. The Jays
misfired and the Flyers began
to milk the clock after gather-
ing the rebound and forced
the Jays to foul. As it was all
night, the charity stripe was
anything but charitable to the
hosts as they missed six free
throws (they went 9-of-24
overall for 37.5% versus the
Jays 2-of-3 for 66.7%) but the
Jays could not answer, miss-
ing a pair of triples. The Jays
missed another bomb and on
the rebound, the Flyers got
a 2-on-1 layup from Ryan
Mescher (12 markers) with
seven ticks left for a 4-point
lead. The Jays’ Curtis Geise
(12 counters, 3 treys) was
fouled in the act of shooting
with one second left. He hit
the first and after a Marion
timeout, intentionally missed
the second but it did not hit
the rim, giving the hosts
the orb out of bounds. They
turned it over on the inbound
play with half a second left
near the Blue Jay bench.
Senior Jordan Leininger got
the ball near mid-court and
fired a shot that hit the front
of the rim and fell away as
time expired.
“This was a tough and
very disappointing loss. This
is two games in a row like
that we couldn’t hold a lead
and find a way to win,” St.
John’s coach Aaron Elwer
noted. “We put ourselves thee
with a chance to win but we

a solid job not letting them
do that. However, they got a
few offensive rebounds that
they made pay off; in a tight
game like that, those are pos-
sessions that hurt you.”
The Jays finished 16-of-
45 from the floor (6-of-27
long range) for 35.6 percent.
Despite being outsized at
every position, they only lost
the rebounding war 33-26
(11-7 offensive) but they also

Continental Pirates keep Musketeer boys winless repeated mistakes we have

FORT JENNINGS — The
Fort Jennings Musketeers
were out to play spoilers to
the Continental Pirates’ Putnam
County League boys basketball
chances on Friday night at The
Fort.
Despite keeping pace early
with their opponents, the
Division IV state-ranked Pirates
proved to be too much, com-
ing away with a 61-40 victory
and remaining undefeated in the
PCL.
Kurt Warnecke gave the
hosts a brief 5-4 lead with a bas-
ket off a steal early in the game
but a Brock Homier (18 points)
3-pointer gave the Pirates the
lead for good at 10-5 with 2:34
to go in the first stanza.
Senior John Spitnale led all
scorers with 20 points for the
Pirates.
Jeremy Kohli led Jennings
with 15 markers; Cody
Warnecke added 11 points and
five boards in the effort.
Both teams shot lights-out
from the foul line, with the guests
connecting on 12-of-16 attempts
(75%) and the Musketeers hit
14-of-19 from the stripe (73%),
including a 5-of 8 performance
by Warnecke.
The Pirates put together a
7-0 run in the first quarter to
separate themselves from their
hosts and took a 19-9 lead into
the second canto.
Continental kept a double
digit lead for most of the contest
despite a 6-2 spurt by the home
team to end the first 16 minutes
of play. However, Warnecke and
Kohli sparked the Musketeers
before the break as the Pirates
took a 35-21 advantage at the
half.
Continental would start the
second half strong, paced by
Spitnale hitting four shots from
the field, accounting for nine
of the Pirates’ 13 third-quarter
points.
Nevertheless, the Musketeers
battled back to within 10 when
Kohli connected on both ends
of a 2-shot foul to make it a
41-31 contest with 3:42 left in
the third.
The Pirates would take over
in last 11:42 and roll off a 20-9
spree, holding their hosts to just
four points in the final quarter,
while Homier drained 7-of-8
from the foul line in the final
period.
The win puts the Pirates
right in the middle of the PCL
race with Kalida and Columbus
Grove.
Continental faces both in the
next two weeks. The loss keeps
the Musketeers )0-12, 0-3 PCL)
winless on the season.
They finished with 13-of-
24 shooting (0-of-2 downtown)
for 59 percent and added 19
turnovers. They visit unbeaten
McComb tonight.

In the first overtime,
Winner again broke a 34-34
tie with a layin to draw first
blood but Geise gave the Jays
the lead with a 3-ball 30 ticks
later. Alex Rosenbeck hit a
baste and 1-of-2 free throws
in the next 1:41 to put the
hosts up 39-37. However, he
missed two throws five sec-
onds later and the Jays got the
board. However, the guests
turned it over (13 for the
game versus 16 for the home
team) and with time winding
down and down by two, the
Jays needed a miracle. Geise
provided it; he picked the
pocket of a Flyer near mid-
14 downtown, for 42.1 per-
cent.
In the junior varsity match-
up, the Jays stayed perfect at
10-0 (4-0 MAC) with a 45-33
triumph.
Ryan Buescher paced
the victors with 14, while

Delphos Tri-County
Wrestling Club will host its
16th annual Miami Valley
Kids Wrestling Association
home meet Sunday at St.
John’s in the Robert A.
Arnzen Gymnasium.
The first tournament for
the club was held in 1996 as
a fundraiser and to the get
the word out about youth
wrestling.
Some 200 grapplers par-
ticipated in the meet.
The initial season of Tri-
County had less than 20
wrestlers and four coaches
including: Tom Merschman,
Dave Swick, Mike Metcalfe

This year, the club has
grown to 56 wrestlers
with 16 coaches. Practices
are held at the ROC and
draws kids from Delphos,
Ft. Jennings, Spencerville,
Van Wert, Elida, Elgin and
Wapak.
The program’s intent is to
teach the kids the basics of
the sport of wrestling, while
also focusing on sportsman-
ship, how to compete well.
It’s a nice introduction for
future competition. The ref-
erees at these events do a
good job of reinforcing that:
they explain to the kids what

The club is thriving today
because of all the volunteers

We all went 2-2 in last
week’s playoff picks.

though Pittsburgh’s offen-
sive line is ripe for a blitzing
defense like the Jets’ with their
injuries at tackle, do you for
one minute think the Jets will
have everything go as smooth-

been called

Jets’ mouthy ways will catch
up to them one way or the
other and will pay the price. I
pick it is this week.
GREEN BAY: Everyone is
talking about the poor sod at
Solder Field as being a big fac-
tor. That may be so. However,
Aaron Rodgers — if he hasn’t
before — is surely entering
into the elite zone of NFL
quarterbacks. He can handle
the load — he did all year
without a running game. With
the Packers having a defense
that is playing up to the abili-
ties that most experts thought
it would from the start, I
don’t see this as an offensive

cult to take down with his size.
He also has the pump fake
which throws off the blitzing
cornerbacks. Mike Wallace
and Hines Ward are some of

and are a great 1-2 punch for
the Steelers to take advantage
of and I think the Steelers take
this contest in a close matchup
and advance to Dallas for the
Super Bowl.
Packers over Bears. The
Packers are probably the hot-
test team in the NFL right
now and they are playing at
a peak performance which is
right where they want to be
at this time in the year. Aaron
Rodgers is really stepping up
and showing everyone why
the Packers decided to go with
him over Favre 2 years ago
and their decision to do so has
obviously been well worth it. I
think that the Packers will not
have any trouble winning the
NFC Championship game this
weekend as I look for them to

DELPHOS — One’s reasons
for enlisting in any branch of the
United States armed services are
unique to the volunteer. However,
the security of having three squares,
a bed and monthly income are a
common theme. Discipline, struc-
ture and maturity are often part of
the mix, even if not realized until
after one’s time has been served.
Harold Beckner, 68, graduated
from Jefferson High School not
long before enlisting in the army in
1961. He joined because he didn’t
quite know what to do with himself,
so the military seemed to be a good
idea.
“I enlisted for the adventure of
getting out into the world. I had
worked at a snack shop that had
closed and I went to work washing
cars. I wasn’t making much money
and I had wrecked my car. Mom

former U.S. soldier in civilian court
of crimes committed while on active
duty in Iraq.

6th Circuit Court of Appeals in
Cincinnati asked attorneys in the
case of former Pfc. Steven Dale
Green if the Military Extraterritorial
Jurisdiction Act was written uncon-
stitutionally or if it is being applied
