What this Module is About

Understanding agreement and disagreement is an important part of understanding

spoken English fluently. If you are participating in a conversation, or even just listening to

one, you need to know the signs of agreement and disagreement so you can follow what’s

going on. If you’re listening to a lecture, like a professor talking in a classroom, you’ll also

need to be able to pick up on when the speaker is discussing other people’s ideas and

whether he agrees or disagrees with them. (Foster,2003)

In this lesson, we’ll go over key words and clues that will help you listen for

agreement and disagreement.

This module on agreeing and disagreeing on the ideas of the speaker listened to can

be a supplement learning material for the first quarter, Grade 9-English.

This supplementary learning module adheres to the content standard and learning

objectives prescribed in the Curriculum Guide. It discusses about skills on how to agree and

disagree with the ideas of the speaker politely.

Summary

Nowadays, we are confronted with different issues from Covid-19 down to the

Anti-Terror Bill. The whole country is divided into two groups: one group agrees with

the issue while the other one does not. It is fascinating to note that Filipinos are this

involved in deciding what is good for the country. However, you cannot help yourself

from cringing sometimes every time you witness how some of us express our

opinions through personal attacks and use of foul language. It is disheartening to

notice that we fail to realize the true essence of standing up for an issue which is to

better the nation.

Instead what is happening now is quite the contrary. If you try to read

comments in the social media nowadays, you will notice how people are so

calloused in their choice of words in agreeing or disagreeing with the opinions of

other people. The purpose of fighting for what one believes to be the best for the

country is defeated. The inability to use the correct expressions to express one’s

sentiments about an issue has caused so much trouble and marred relationships. In

order to maintain peace and relationship with your fellow human beings, you must

learn to master the art of argument through using the correct phrases/expressions in

expressing agreement and disagreement. No matter how passionate you are on the

issue being thrown to you, you must always observe proper decorum and again the

use of the right expressions for agreement and disagreement will go a long way in

fostering peace and unity in the society. At the end of the day, we are still brothers

and sisters, so express agreement and disagreement in the right way.
