What is a Family Emergency Plan?

- According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, families can make
emergencies less stressful by preparing in advance and working together as
a team. A family emergency plan will not only help you protect yourself, but
also your loved ones.

Flood

-A flood is a hydrological hazard that is a generally and temporary condition of

partial or complete inundation of normally dry land areas from overflow of inland or tidal
waters from the unusual and rapid accumulation or runoff of surface waters from any
source.

If we are going to base it with our geographical location, our community is

actually situated near the Davao River which makes it highly expose to flooding. Since
our house is a two-storey house, it is assured that we can pile our things in our second
floor in case a flood will break out. But having a two-storey house doesn’t mean we
don’t need to prepare a family emergency plan but instead no matter how many storey
your house can have, you will still need a family emergency plan to mitigate the risk.

PRECAUTIONARY MEASUREMENTS BEFORE A FLOOD:

 Everyone in the family should learn how to do first aid.

 Father will hire someone to renovate the house or merely he and brother will help
each other in reinforcing the house themselves.
 Everyone should learn what a flood is and will know what to do if there’s a flood
break out in the community.
 Father should be familiar with the place and he should have a plan on where to
go or the safest route to evacuate.
 Everyone should know the emergency hotline.
 Father should check the insurance.
 Since our community is situated near the river, most of the people in our
community will be monitoring the water level before they’re going to alert the
whole community. So, if there’s a consistent heavy rainfall or a sudden increase
in the water level of the river, father will be the one who will help in monitoring the
condition of the water.
 Mother will wait for the command of father before securing all the important and
essential things.
 If father will notice that the water escalates quickly every after second, he will
then alert mother to secure the things that aren’t supposed to be reached by the
flood.
 Brother will help mother in securing the important things. He and father will move
the furniture and other essential items to the upper floor of the house.
 I will be the one who will prepare the emergency survival kit [Clean clothes, Food
that cannot be easily spoiled (at least three to four day supply), Water ( a gallon
of water per person), Flashlight with extra batteries or candles with matches,
Battery-operated radio with extra batteries, First aid kit, Can opener (if not easily
opened canned foods)]

PRECAUTIONARY MEASUREMENTS DURING A FLOOD:

 Since he is the head of the family, father will be the one who will secure the
house. He will switch off the electrical breaker & unplug the appliances. He’ll the
lock all the doors to avoid thieves from entering the house.
 If everything is secured already, father will not wait for the water to rise even
more. Instead, he will make sure that we, his family, have to evacuate in a safer
place.
 I should be the one assigned to bring the emergency survival kit. Brother will help
me in carrying the gallons of water, which is part of the survival kit.
 Mother will keep an eye on my brother and me, and also the pets.
 Brother and I should cooperate with what our parents will tell us to do.
 Everyone should stay calm.
 Everyone should listen to the news on the radio.
 If one of the family members has an open wound, he/she should avoid going
through the water to avoid diseases such as leptospirosis.

PRECAUTIONARY MEASUREMENTS AFTER A FLOOD:

 If the authorities will tell that it is safe to return to our house already, then father
will get us from the place where he evacuates us, and we will return together to
our home.
 Father will check the house first before it is safe for the family to enter.
 If there’s a help given by the government, father should assure that his family has
received one.
 Father will check the appliances if it safe to use it or if it is not damaged.
 Mother will be the one who will take care of the food, and help father in cleaning
the house after the flood.
 Brother and I should also our parents in cleaning.
