1. Given the velocity field of a fluid flow

G
V = (3x − 2 y )i垐
+ (2 x − 3 y ) j
Find (i) the acceleration field,
(ii) the stream function, and
(iii) the equation of the streamlines.
(10 marks)
2. (a) Air enters a converging nozzle with negligible speed at a pressure of 200kPa and a temperature
of 320K. The exit diameter of the nozzle is 0.8 m. The flow inside the nozzle is isentropic. If
the Mach number at the nozzle exit is 0.7, calculate
(i) the pressure and temperature at the nozzle exit,
(ii) the mass flow rate, and
(iii) the Mach number inside the nozzle where the area is 0.65 m2.
For air, take γ = 1.4 and R = 287J/(kg ⋅ K) . (6 marks)

(b) An insulated straight duct of friction factor 0.009 and constant diameter of 0.8 m is now
attached to the nozzle exit. Assuming the Mach number at the nozzle exit is maintained at the
same value 0.7, determine the duct length for which the Mach number at the duct exit is 0.8.
