RESERCH METHODOLOGIES IN BUILT ENVIRONMENT

ASSIGNMENT 1

UNDERSTANDING:

This paper is about dealing with the packaging waste and how it can be reused after
consumer usage of the product. And qualitative approach is used. There are 3 classifications
of packaging materials and its is classified based on commodities, which are Primary,
Secondary and tertiary, where

1. Primary packaging: when the product reaches directly to the customer, i.e.,

Seller consumer

(e.g: Plastic wraps, cardboard boxes etc.)

2. Secondary Packaging: when the product reaches resellers, i.e.,

Seller Shop Dealers or Retail outlets or Distributors

(e.g: Cartons, crates Packages)

3. Tertiary Packaging: involves in bulk handling

(e.g: Wooden Crates, Container, Metal Pallets etc.).

This paper also emphasises the point that the consumer waste tends to end up in landfills, in most
cases. So, to solve this problem, architects have started to do waste generation which is reusing the
consumer waste for construction. Architects who uses this method are as Yatin Pandya, Shigeru Ban,
Chitra Viswanath have contributed more in innovation to reuse the consumer waste. Bottle
Construction, Tyre bale construction, Paper construction are some of the recognised construction
techniques from consumer waste.

STRUCTURE OF PAPER:

The structure of the paper is based on how practices are approached in today’s context. to
understand that process, qualitative analysis has been done to investigate and consolidate the
diverse practices. It starts with how the packaging waste handling were given important from the
olden age and this depicts that ‘packaging waste handling’ has been given important for a very long
time. And this laid as an important way to achieve ‘eco-centric ideal’. And brief Introduction were
given about how the packaging wastes are classified and how architects use packaging wastes. The
main focus is to know about illumination, comprehensive understanding and extension and details
of data collection are reported systematically. Multiple sources were used to collect the data, such
as diverse secondary sources like websites, magazines, articles, research papers and interviews.
The gathered information are compiled to know about the techniques adopted to construct the
different components of the building such as foundation, wall, roof, light diffusers, fillers in slabs etc
in permanent structures. The paper is all about all about expressing the relationship between
Architectural construction with packed waste from consumers it tends to be a Correlational
research. So, the paper does not derive any kind of inference but only focus on study.

VIEWS ON RESEARCH:

Contextual research has been done. Since Consumer waste cannot be limited or restricted and it is
important to find alternate ways to reduce waste and carbon footprint. Simultaneously, how much
good will it reciprocate in reducing the damage caused in the environment. For Example, Tyre
construction causes pollution while manufacturing as well as while recycling and to support this it
won’t get decomposed either.

POINTS TO SUPPORT:

In my opinion except tertiary and secondary packaging methods, primary has the most potential in
generation of plastic waste, cause most packed items have the usage of plastic which ends in dump
yard. The recycled building material must be durable and feasible for the construction.
