Writing Assignment 1

Task One:-The way how we give credit (or say appreciate) to others own work in our work is

called citation. In other words citation is to let the reader know the main source written by the

original author which it belongs to.

One of the acceptable methods of citation is when a work has no author or may have taken from

a book written by few authors with their ideas, it should be in the double quotation marks

followed by the year it is originally written. The following example explains the citation method.

“When paraphrasing or directly quoting from a source, you must give credit to the source. If the

source is not credited, then you as the author of the paper assume credit for the ideas or the

quotations contained within, and this constitutes plagiarism”-taken from abridged version of the

style and formatting guidelines found in the publication manual of the “ American Psychological

Association”,6th ed (2009).

Task two: - The word copyright in general itself defines that the complete rights of your work

belongs to only you and you are the only person can make changes, distribute (make a copy),

destroy etc.. A small music (sound) made by me with my piano is my own piece of work and I

have the exclusive rights to save, copy, perform etc.. So the copyright is the rights we pose on

our art, creation, work and stop reproducing the same by others.

“The owner of a copyright has the right to exclude any other person from reproducing, preparing

derivative works, distributing, performing, displaying, or using the work covered by copyright
for a specific period of time. Copyrighted work can be literary work, musical work, dramatic

work, pantomime, choreographic work, pictorial work, graphic work, sculptural work, motion

picture, audiovisual work, sound recording, architectural work, mask works fixed in

semiconductor chip products, or a computer program.” - Taken from the “Lectric Law Library’s

Lexicon”. - (web source).

Task Three: - Plagiarism is copying other person’s ideas or their work. It can be called as

stealing knowledge or art in a simple way. Plagiarism is in many ways copying work, stealing

the ideas, not using proper citation of others work. Without using proper citation the major

plagiarism can be done by reconstructing the sentence with no change in the meaning.

According to “Gibaldi J.MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 6th edition”, MLA

2003. Pg. 66, 2.1 Definition of Plagiarism – “Using another person’s ideas, information, or

expressions without acknowledging that person’s work constitutes intellectual theft. Passing off

another person’s ideas, information, or expressions as your own to get a better grade or gain

some other advantage constitutes fraud.”

Task Four: - TurnItIn brought a revolution in reducing the plagiarism in many schools and

universities. The usage of The TurnItIn in Wright state university by faculty gives a perfect

feedback to student’s paper (work). It allows the student to check on his own written papers for

any matches in the internet source and allow him to deliver his best performance in writing skills

and presentations which in turn reduces the risk of plagiarism.

Task Five: - VLSI layout chip designing being my personal interested topic. As an Electrical

Engineer my interested field in layout chip designing using Very Large Scale Integrated Circuit

cadence platform. The challenging aspect of this kind of designing is to make a design layout
with less power dissipation being the objective in a custom small design area. The latest INTEL

Processor ‘Sandy Bridge Core’ has a set of 1.16 billion transistors in a single chip in less than a

square inch of area.
