grade.
Class Guidelines
• Attendance is strongly encouraged, if a student misses class, that student is responsible for
obtaining notes from a classmate.
• Academic integrity is expected and infractions will not be tolerated. See University Senate
Rules sections 6.3 and 6.4 at
http://www.uky.edu/Faculty/Senate/rules_regulations/index.htm.
• During class students are encouraged to ask questions and to participate in discussion
• ALL electronic devices such as ipads, tablets, laptops and cell phones are prohibited during
class without the express prior approval of the professor.

nearby peers,” Computers & Education, 62, 2013.
o Mueller et al., “The pen is mightier than the keyboard: advantages of longhand over
laptop note taking” Psychological Science 25, 2014.
• Students who need special accommodations for disabilities please speak with the professor
• 3 minute breaks halfway through the class will be given as needed

Learning Goals
• Develop analytic skills
• Develop ability to apply principles and generalizations already learned to new problems
and situations
• Develop intuition for equilibrium problems

Course Outcomes
Students will be able to:
1. Perform necessary vector operations.
2. Determine moment of a force in both 2D and 3D systems.
3. Determine resultants of force-couple systems and distributed loadings.
4. Identify and draw appropriate free-body diagrams.
5. Solve equilibrium problems in both 2D and 3D.
6. Analyze trusses, frames, and simple machines.
7. Draw shear and bending moment diagrams.
8. Solve problems involving dry friction.
9. Locate center of gravity and centroid of a body.
10. Determine moment of inertia of an area.

Student Responsibilities
Lecture Notes
Students are responsible for attending class and obtaining notes as they are given. If the
student is absent, the student is responsible for obtaining notes from a classmate. Notes
will not be posted.
Class attendance
Students anticipating an absence for a major religious holiday are responsible for notifying
the instructor in writing of anticipated absences due to their observance of such holidays
no later than the last day to add a class in the semester.
Homework Assignments
Homework (HW) will be assigned weekly and due the following week, see schedule. HW
must be turned in before leaving class. Late HW will not be accepted. At the end of the
semester, the lowest HW score will be dropped. There are 12 HWs assigned, 11 HWs will
count toward your final grade. Students who have an excused absence on a due date (such
as athletes etc.) must arrange to submit HW before the due date. See HW formatting below.
Quizzes
Quizzes will be given on a semi-regular basis without prior notice during the first 5-7
minutes of class. These are given for continuity of course content and for increasing self-
awareness of progress within the course.
Examination
The three exams are given to determine the students’ understanding of the intended
learning outcomes for this course. Students will need to bring a scientific calculator for all
exams. Communication devices such as cell phones or tablets may not be used. No
reference material may be supplied by the student. Prior to each exam, the student will be
provided a list of any reference material that will be supplied by the instructor. The
number one experience of test takers is feeling like they need more time, so a wise student
would prepare for the added time constraint by performing practice exams as written in
the course outline. If a student misses a test because of an excused absence, the average of
the other test grades will be assigned to the missed test.
Late Assignment Policy
Acceptance of late work will be considered only in cases of excused absences, and such
requests must be made in advance, if possible. If a student must miss class, please refer to
the University Senate Rules, section 5.2.4.2 – Excused Absences, which can be found at
http://www.uky.edu/Faculty/Senate/rules_regulations/index.htm. Students will be asked
to verify their absences in order for them to be considered excused. An Excused Absence
Form must be submitted, in class or via email, with supporting documentation. A grade of
zero will be given for all work missed due to unexcused absences.

Student Interaction
Communication
Communication between instructor and student, outside of the classroom, is available in
the following ways: Meetings by arrangement or during regularly scheduled office hours, or
e-mail. UK email addresses will be used. Students must activate e-mail forwarding if they
prefer another primary e-mail address. Expect responses to emails within 24hrs in the
9am-6pm time frame. Emails sent after 6pm will not be addressed until the following day.
Canvas Access
Canvas will be used to communicate announcements, assignments, grades, etc. UK’s Canvas
website is available at uk.instructure.com. Each student should verify their access to this
course on Canvas during the first week of class.
Grade Inaccuracies
Students should discuss any inaccuracies in grading directly with the professor (not the
TA) within 3 days of posted grades via email and/or office hours.

Professor Responsibilities
• Determine learning goals for the course and assessing student attainment of said goals
• Provide a learning environment where students can succeed
• Attendance, preparedness in class and accessibility during office hours
• Prompt return of graded assignments, 1 week for HW, 1-2 weeks for Exams
• Fairness and consistency
Midterm Grades
Midterm grades will include quizzes taken Aug 25 -Oct 13, Exam 1, and HWs 1-6.
Homework Formatting

Use of engineering paper is recommended but not required. It provides grid lines that are useful
for drawing resultants and free body diagrams. Use a ruler to draw lines for resultants and free
body diagrams regardless of paper choice. HWs with multiple pages must be stapled, points will
be taken off if not stapled and instructor is not responsible for missing pages. Points will be taken
off for unprofessional work at the discretion of the grader. Points will also be taken off for a lack of
units. Circle or underline the final answer for a problem.

Examples: A = 535 lb ß or B = 300 lb at 30 degrees to the horizontal

A correct answer includes magnitude, direction, proper units and is underlined or circled.

For answers that include free body diagrams, all parts must of the diagram must be correct
in direction, magnitude, and units. Example:

Draw a free body diagram where G represents the center
Answer:
of mass of the structure, which has a mass of 1 kg.

All forces, which includes reaction forces, are properly labeled and include magnitude, direction,
and units as necessary. Three significant digits should be used.

Notation:
Book By hand
Scalar a a
Vector a (bold faced) a or

Units:
Dimensional
Quantity SI Units U.S. Units
Symbol
Mass M kilogram kg slug
Length L meter m feet ft
Force F Newton N pound lb
Time T second s second sec
