Ausgabe der Synopsis of the Four Gospels

in

Evangeliums neue Moglichkeiten eroffnet.

DUODECIMAE EDITIONIS PRAEFATIO

Synopseos apparatum criticum iam retractatum, cum anno 1967 quartam editionem publici iuris feci, anno 1976 denuo exami-
natum praebui in editione nona, cuius textus ad ilium invenitur accomodatus, quem exhibent editio vicesima sexta Novi Testamenti
a Nestle-Aland curata et editio tertia iiiius, quod dicitur Greek New Testament. Nunc banc duodecimam editionem emisi, cui mul-
tum profuerat, quod quarta iam impressio editionis vicesimae sextae Novi Testamenti (Nestle-Aland^*"^ 1981) in manibus erat. Cum
haec impressio vario modo tribus prioribus praestaret, textum quoque synopseos iterum percensere consentaneum erat, ne quis
ratu critico, quem funditus renovare paramus. Nam
semel iterumque cogitantibus videbatur nobis apparatus critici dispositionem
qualis erat retinere non recepto eo, quem Nestle-Aland praebent; hunc potius ad futuras editiones adhibere constituimus illius operis,
quod dicitur Synopsis of the Four Gospels.

Societas Biblica Stuttgartiensis aestate anni MCMLII mihi mandavit, ut consilio editionis anno MCMXXIX a Societate capto,
me

uniuscuiusque pericopes subditur, utpote necessarius diligenter inquirenti.

Quis enim textum legat, quin iis signis ductus statim videat, an
et quales sint lectiones variae, utrum addatur aliquid an omittatur an verba transponantur etc.? Insignium codicum vel versionum
veterum non omnes singulasque lectiones afferri, quibus a textu discrepant, manifestum est; annitebar tamen, ne ullam omitterem
graviorem, usus Veteris Latinae versionis editione Juelicheriana, Syriacarum autem cum Veterum tum Vulgatae (Syriace Peshitta)
necnon Sahidicae et Bohairicae versionum nova ex editis coUatione a professore Dr. Dr. Alexandro Boehlig facta. Quoniam deserere

decretum est ilium canonem Nestleo sacrum constituendi secundum editiones Tischendorfianam Westcott-Hortianam Weissianam

textum ipsum. nee illae nee Sodeniana nominantur, nisi lectionem coniciunt, cum et aliorum interpretum coniecturae annotentur,
vel aliter interpungunt etc. At interdum editiones a Merk, Vogels, Bover paratas adhibui, ubicumque iudicium earum gravius vide-
batur. Videsis singula in elencho codicum manuscriptorum (p. XIV-XXIX) atque siglorum et abbreviationum (p. XXX-XXXII),
qui etiam in folio separato habetur.
Grave officium parandae huius synopsis atque edendae non suscepissem, nisi persuasum mihi fuisset a multis me strenue adiutum

a professore Dr. Bruce M. Metzger (Princeton/USA) Anglice scripta sunt, Latine a RP. Dr. Bonifatio Fischer O.S.B., monacho
Idem Dr. B. M. Metzger Anglicam, D. E. Haenchen professor Monasteriensis Germanicam. Dr. G. Garitte professor Lovaniensis
Latinam versionem evangelii, quod Thomae nomen prae se fert, suppeditaverunt, unusquisque ipso textu coptico utens. Id ab indole

totius operis non abhorret omnibusque legentibus gratissimum erit.

PREFACE TO THE TWELFTH EDITION

In the 4th edition of 1967 the critical apparatus of this edition was revised, and in the 9th edition of 1976 the text was brought
into conformity with the 26th edition of Nestle-Aland's Novum Testameniiini graece and with the 3rd edition of the United Bible
Societies' Greek New Tesiameni, and the critical apparatus was once more reviewed. For this 12th edition the 26th edition of Nestle-
Aland was available in its 4th corrected printing (1981). with many improvements over the first three printings. The text has there-
fore been reviewed once more to ensure accuracy of the text, even to its punctuation.
After much consideration it has seemed more appropriate to retain the critical apparatus of the earlier editions rather than to
adopt that of the Nestle-Aland 26th edition as we shall do in the 6th edition of the Synopsis of the Four Gospels now in preparation. The
Greek-English edition is a simplified edition with adaptations designed not only for expediency but also to promote more efficiant
use (omitting texts from the Apocrypha, supplementary texts from the Church Fathers, and also secondary New Testament parallels,
etc.). The »large edition», however, will retain its independent apparatus, which can be a useful supplement to the apparatus of
XI

Nestle-Aland not only because of its greater comprehensiveness but by its structural differences as well, further modified only by
replacing the siglum ^ by sigla for individual manuscripts as in Nestle-Aland'", the siglum by )Di , and by adding the readings of

a group of manuscripts whose importance has been recognized since 1967.

March 28, 1982 Kurt Aland

FROM THE PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION

In the summer of 1952 the Wurttembergische Bibelanstalt after having made different other attempts since 1929 delegated to the

undersigned the task of producing a Greek synopsis which would supply material in a complete and convenient format for the ex-

egesis of the Gospels, suitable for use in academic instruction and scientific research.

After spending several years of painstaking labor to complete this Synopsis Quattuor Evangeliorum, the compiler can only hope
that the originalaim has been attained. The previous work by Schmiedel was utilized gratefully, but in reality this Synopsis has become
a totally new work which differs from Schmiedel's «Symphony of the Gospels« as much as it differs in many respects also from
other synopses. The most obvious difference involves the utilization of the entire Gospel according to John, which in other synopses
is represented only in a piecemeal fashion or even sometimes only in the form of cross references. The Synopsis can be used, how-

ever, apart from all theories of source criticism, for the text of each of the four Gospels has been reproduced in its continuity. On
the other hand, for every section of the Synopsis all the relevant passages of the other Gospels are given again in full, and in this way
the user has each time the entire material placed before his eyes in what I hope is a perspicuous form. Tiresome leafing about and re-

ferring to other passages in the Synopsis is eliminated, as is the need for simultaneous consultation of a New Testament, for relevant
passages from all parts of the New Testament are printed along with each section, as are also the most important parallels from the

New Testament Apocrypha and the Church Fathers. Through the abundance of the material presented (to mention only this fea-
ture) it appears that an advance has been made, for the exact parallelization of the texts which has been attempted will make it easier
than has often been the case heretofore to discern the connections between them. In the exegesis of the first three Gospels (or of any
one of them) the Gospel according to John can now be just as easily consulted as all Synoptic parallels, and the printing of material
from the Apocrypha permits a considerable extension of investigation. On the other hand, by making it practicable to consider the
Fourth Gospel in full comparison with the Synoptic tradition, new possibilities are opened for the exegesis of the Gospel of John.
The plan of the Synopsis in detail can be seen directly from using it, and therefore only a few observations need to be made here.
The headings in several languages will facilitate the use of the Synopsis beyond the area where German is understood. The Latin
and English texts do not represent simply a wooden translation from the German, but provide headings for the respective sections

in accord with usage current among those who use Latin und English (at the same time account is taken of the advantages of assim-
ilation whenever possible). The chapter and verse references for the leading texts (which, in their succession, form the consecutive
text of the Gospels) are printed in medium bold-face type. References at the beginning and at the end of these sections, so far as
they are not given in their original order, indicate clearly the connection between them. In addition to these leading texts there will
be found primary and secondary parallels. The primary parallels are printed in normal type and can be recognized by the fact that
their chapter and verse references are not printed in medium bold-face type; the secondary parallels are immediately recognizable
by being in smaller print. In each case both kinds of parallels are supplied with references by number and page to the place where
they are printed as leading texts.A critical apparatus is provided not only for each principal passage but for the principal parallels also,
for an investigation of mutual relationships requires the consultation of textual variants. The subject apparatus for each section supplies
references within the text as well as parallels from the Old and New Testament which will serve to illustrate the text. In other words,
here is a concise commentary which will direct the user to further material, and thus in academic instruction teacher and student
alike will no doubt be spared much trouble both in dictating and in writing down information.
It is understandable that along with the text of Nestle's Novum Testamentum
Graece its text-critical sigla are also taken over.
Consultation with many Testament has confirmed the conviction of the compiler that by using these sigla one
professors of New
attains not only a considerable compression of valuable space for the textual apparatus but also a substantial simplification and a
greater precision. By the presence of these sigla it will be apparent in reading the text whether one should consult the apparatus
for variant readings, and, if so, of what character they are (additions, omissions, alterations, and so forth). It is understandable that
not every variation from the text found in the chief manuscripts or early versions has been recorded in the apparatus; at the same
time an effort was made to include every significant reading.
Jiilicher's edition of the Itala is the basis of quotations of the Old Latin version. The Old Syriac and the Peshitta as well as the

Sahidic and Bohairic versions in the current editions were newly collated by Prof. Dr. Alexander Bohlig. Since the policy which
XII

Nestle followed in mechanically constituting the text from the editions of Tischendorf, Westcott-Hort, and Weiss has now been
abandoned in principle, the recording of the readings of these editions, along with readings from von Soden's edition, can be dis-

continued. They are cited only in cases where the reading is of a conjectural nature (in which case various modern commentators

-)
are also cited), or involves a difference of punctuation or the like. For such details the editions of Merk, Vogels, and Bover have
also occasionally been taken into account, so far as the judgment of these editors may prove to be of real importance. The list of

manuscripts (pp. XIV-XXIX), as well as the list of sigia and abbreviations (pp. in the introduction to the Synopsis,

supplies further information as to details.

The undersigned would not have dared to undertake so great a task as the preparation of this Synopsis (with all that is involved
in theway of preliminary studies) had he not been assured of the help and support over the years of a great number of assistants,
made available in still greater number during the past few years by the Institute for New Testament Text-Research at Miinster.
The preparation of a Synopsis, or indeed of an edition of the whole New Testament, is not possible without the collation of numerous
Greek manuscripts, the careful examination of the early versions (involving also their manuscripts), the excerpting of the writings
of at least the Greek Church Fathers - to mention only a few tasks - and a single individual is not sufficient nowadays for the burden
of this toil. If, however, one should undertake such a task, the danger lies near at hand either that he should do his work at second-
hand, and thus too selectively and summarily, or that he should succumb to the danger of error to a greater extent than is allowable.

For modern examples enough. One cannot mention all who have contributed their aid in the preparation of this Synopsis;
this there are

as a representative among many, one must mention K. Junack, who has participated in the work since the beginning. Especial thanks
from the undersigned are due to Prof. Dr. Erwin Nestle and Prof. Dr. G. Delling, who not only shared in the reading of the proofs
of this Synopsis, but whose valuable counsel constantly aided in its evolution. Prof. Dr. Bruce M. Metzger of Princeton, N. J. (U.S.A.),
has formulated the phrasing of the English headings of the several sections; and Father Dr. Bonifatius Fischer, O.S.B., of the
Monastery of Beuron, the Latin headings. Both likewise are responsible for the accompanying English and Latin forms of this

Preface. The compiler is sincerely grateful to them not only for this help but also for various suggestions made during the years of
partnership in this work. Prof. Dr. B. M. Metzger has also contributed the English translation of the Gospel of Thomas, printed
in the Appendix I; Prof. Dr. E. Haenchen, of Miinster, prepared the German translation; and Prof. Dr. G. Garitte, of Louvain,
the Latin translation. This threefold rendering corresponds to the overall plan of the Synopsis; the translations, it should be added,
are independent of one another, and each goes back to the Coptic text. All users of the Synopsis will be indebted to the afore-
mentioned scholars for this worthwhile supplement to the volume.
Not least, the compositors of the Wiirttembergische Bibelanstalt must be thanked, who, through the solving of exceedingly great
technical difficulties involved in setting the type for a work of this sort, have contributed to the success of the undertaking, an
undertaking made possible only by the initiative and sacrifice of the authorities of the Bibelanstalt. A variety of difficulties have un-
fortunately hindered the completion of this volume. These delays have had, nevertheless, their compensations: it became possible, not
only to incorporate the Gospel of Thomas in the Synopsis and to transpose accordingly the text of the Oxyrhynchos Logia, but also
to include in the text-critical apparatus the complete evidence of the Bodmer Papyri. Even after more than ten years' work, much
still remains to be done; yet I hope that the user will not fail to recognize the amount of labor already expended on the volume.
