What’s In

In our home or in our locality/community there are many bamboo,

wood, and metal products found that we use in our daily lives. Can you
identify some of them? Can you tell their uses? How can we enhance those
products to make it beautiful?

6
What’s New

What is Industrial Arts? Do you know that it plays an important role in our
economy? Yes. In this module, you will find many occupations and businesses that
belong in this area. Thousands are employed in different industrial works, both in
rural and urban areas.

This lesson will acquaint you with different products made of bamboo and
wood that are designed, manufactured, and are sold both here and abroad. It will
also discuss ways by which one can enhance finished products made of these
materials.

It is important that the products you make whether they are made of
bamboo, wood and metals look beautiful and have a high market value. In this
lesson, you will learn the different techniques on how to improve products made of
bamboo, wood and metals. A product’s embellishments, color, shape, size, and
overall designs.

How are you coping with our lesson? I hope you are curious about the
activities we will discuss in this module.

ACTIVITY 1. GUESS ME
Read the phrases on the opposite side, and reveal the word by arranging the jumbled
letters.

1. CANEHEN-_______________________ -to refine, improve or enrich the

surface of the product
2. CORATEDE-_____________________ - to beautify
3. IVANTOVINE-____________________ - something new, creative or
inventive
4.SORIESSECCA-__________________ - something that contributes to the
beauty
5. KETMARYTILIBA-_________________ -the ease of selling products

In this activity the pupils will test their ability in guessing the right word.

What is It

After doing the activities above, you are now ready for the lesson. What do
you think are the importance and methods of enhancing/decorating bamboo
and wood products?

Importance of Enhancing/Decorating Bamboo and Wood products

 Finished products tend to be more saleable to customers when

enhanced and decorated.
 Enhanced and decorated finished products help maintain their
durability from harsh elements.
 Finished products that are enhanced or decorated beautify the
product itself.

8
A. Methods of enhancing/decorating bamboo and wood products

Woodcraft and bamboo craft can be enhanced using a variety of

methods and techniques. These include:

1. Woodturning is a process of using a lathe to make various forms

and shapes of wood.

2. Hand Carving is considered as woodcraft in which a sharp object

is used to create designs on the wood. Various textures and
surfaces can be using this technique. Tools such as chip carving
knife, gouges, and chiels are used.

3. Pyrography – is considered an art using a fire or heat to decorate

wood or leather.

4. Flocking technique- lines the interior of drawers and boxers with

a soft velvety finish.
“Flocking” is a decoration process that enhances the way a
wide variety of products are experienced by
making ordinary surfaces seem far more
magical and special.
“Flocking” is the process of depositing millions of
individual cut fiber particles (called “flock) into
the surface of an article for the purpose
of increasing the tactile sensation, aesthetics,
color and appearance.

5. Inlaying- combines several techniques that involve inserting

decorative pieces into a base object to incorporate new designs on
the original product.

9
6. Gilding-is considered as a decorative technique in which powder is
applied on wood or other materials to give a thin coating of gold.
Method of this technique include glueing, chemical gilding, and
electroplating.

7. Staining- it is used to color wood to give an illusion of texture. This

may come in two varieties:

Pigment Dye-
Based based
Stain stain

Color large pores of Color small pores of

the wood the wood

8. Painting – is considered the simplest way of decorating wood since

there is a variety of colors that you can choose from. One may also
add a lacquer finish to make it more shiny and glossy.

B. Metalcraft Enhancing Techniques

The following are some techniques used to enhance or add design

elements on metal products:
1. Engraving- is a method of transferring a design on a metal
using a hardened steel tool called burin or graver to cut into
the surface of the metal.

10
2. Etching- is a process used to make designs or pictures on a
metal plate by using acid that produces corrosive action. In
modern manufacturing, strong chemicals are used on other
types of material.

3. Metal Enhancing Media-such as metal paints, copic

markers and antiquing kits give color to the metal product.
Metal paints maybe applied using a brush or spray.

4. Texturing and Embossing – In this technique you will need

hammers, metal stamps, stencils, and other materials to
create imprints on the metal with different textures, a
hammer and a nail can still be used to create your own
design.
