Bain & Company
Associate Consultant
Job Description:
Bain & Company is a global business consulting firm with offices in all major cities. We help
management make the big decisions: on strategy, operations, mergers & acquisitions,
technology and organization. Bain was founded in 1973 on the principle that consultants must
measure their success in terms of their clients' financial results. Companies that outperform the
market like to work with us; we are as passionate about their results as they are. Bain associate
consultants (ACs) are the heart and soul of our organization. At Bain, you will be our frontline in
developing powerful insights as well as driving results for our clients. We invest heavily in our
ACs. That investment pays off, not only for Bain. A large number of our ACs become business
leaders inside of our firm and across industries. ACs are generalists who work with case teams
and are exposed to a wide variety of industries and capabilities. In each case, ACs find the right
information, create and interpret analyses, and present their findings to case teams and clients.
Their work becomes the basis of the team's strategic recommendations. As ACs become
stronger contributors to their teams, they gain more client contact and broader strategic
development responsibilities. More than just "analysts" who analyse and report data, ACs are
core to how Bain generates results for clients.

Interview: Nearly all rounds began with ice breakers and HR or Resume based questions.
Questions like ‘Why APM’, ‘Are you looking for other roles’, Internships and Projects were
discussed.
Interview Round 1:
● This was a Problem solving round – mainly about Finding the Root cause. Company
requires a Step by step Case Analysis presented as descriptively as possible
● Students need to give a scope to the problem and can ask for hints or more details on
the problem. The case need not be solved ultimately, but only a partial solution and the
metrics might be expected.
Interview Round 2:
● This had a strategy based problem involving guesstimates, market study, etc.
Interview Round 3:
● Product thinking Round where you need to demonstrate that you can focus on different
aspects of the product. How it actually works to how it interacts with the user and other
difficulties in that product being effective.
Interview Round 4:
● Tech understanding round where Tech understanding was checked followed by guessing
how a system you didn’t already know would work.
● Again, user – flow analysis can come in handy, apart from knowledge on different
systems for many broad areas.
Suggestions for interview: Some rounds might feel too fast paced, answering questions with
a strategic approach when the case is not in a textbook framework needs to be kept in mind.
Pick up hints and concede when your answers are corrected, etc.

Checkout Data science interview study guide. Practice coding mostly on InterviewBit, some
interview questions from GeeksForGeeks, along with attempting several company coding tests.
For HR: Just think about what to answer to all the standard HR questions, and you'll be fine.
Suggestions: Just be strong with math that’s all. Company did not prefer any courses as such.
When they ask to write a code for the problem, write the complete thing. Don’t just give the
pseudo-code. Otherwise they'll just keep pointing out the ``bugs’’. Or ask them beforehand what
type of code they are expecting. Try practicing explaining code, and also explaining solution
approaches; i.e., get a grasp of the technical terms used in describing various data structures.

by placement team and some cat material if possible.
GD:
Topics such as ‘Social Media – good or bad’;. GDs can be prepared for with online
resources/guides on how to communicate in a GD.
Technical round 2:
● This was more about understanding the background and fit of the candidate. Again
questions like ‘Why HSBC, Why Analytics profile’ were asked.
HR Round:
Company didn’t seem to prioritize this much. Strengths and weaknesses were asked. Future
plans, etc.
Suggestions: The interviewers look for communication skills and involvement in the discussion;
but candidates can speak in moderation as the process is about collaborative discussing.
Students must also remain focused to defend/justify their points well. Writing down others’

Interview:The were 2 two technical rounds and 1 HR round:
● In the first round, the questions were mostly focused on my Resume. I was asked to
explain each and every point in detail. Then, I was asked about my knowledge in

(definitions of certain coding terms) and also got questions on how to apply in practical

NPTEL courses on OOP and Data structures and algorithms are very useful for software
development roles (especially for tests).
Try to remain calm for your interviews and also know about what the company does and what
profile they are looking for, so that you emphasize those points when they ask "tell me about
yourself". And also don't lie in your resume and prepare a basic HR questions answer
beforehand and practice them with your friends so that you always have some good points to
provide and you will feel much calmer while giving answers to the interviewer.
Don't talk about points that are not relevant to the profile they are looking for. "Give them what
they are looking for" should be what should be in your mind while giving your answers for the
interview questions.
