SHEAR CENTRE OF CIRCULAR D-SECTION

1. NOTATION

A enclosed area of section m2 in2

h depth of web m in

th thickness of web m in

ts thickness of curved wall m in

s developed length of curved wall m in

x distance of shear centre from centre-line of web m in

Both SI and British units are quoted but any coherent system of units may be used.

2. NOTES

Figure 1 presents the ratio x ( h/A ) plotted against s/h for different values of t h /t s .

It is assumed that all direct loads due to bending in the plane of the web are taken by flanges concentrated
at the intersections of the flat web and curved wall; the shear flows in the web and in the curved wall are
therefore constant.

3. DERIVATION

This section lists selected sources that have assisted in the preparation of this Item.

1. BILLEWIEZ, Calcul d’une aile monolongeron, Institut des Recherches de l’Aéronautique,

GRZEDZIELSKI Warsaw, No. 2, 1935.

4. EXAMPLE

It is required to find the shear centre of a D-section having two heavy flanges when h = 0.7 m, t h = 1
mm, s = 2.75 m, t s = 1.25 mm and A = 0.61 m2.

Therefore s/h = 2.75/0.7 = 3.93 and t h /t s = 1/1.25 = 0.8 .

From Figure 1, by interpolation,

x ( h/A ) = 0.484 .
Therefore x = 0.484 × 0.61 /0.7 = 0.422 m.
