ation
introduction
Political globalization refers to the
quantity of political co-operation
that exists among different
countries. It links in with the belief
that “umbrella” global organizations
are better placed than individual
states to prevent conflict and
dispute.
about League
of Nations
established after WW1 was certainly
one of the pioneers in this as it
targeted to include disarmament
and demilitarization, preventing war
through collective security, settling
arguments between countries
through negotiation diplomacy and
improving global welfare.
The United Nations, which
was founded in the
history repercussion and outcome of
World War II, was one of the
first major steps
toward formal political
globalization.
Prior to the advent of the UN,
nations would often
cooperate with each other
history through trade, military
alliances or through the
signing of diplomatic or
military treaties,
but this is not exactly the same thing as political globalization as the nations would
maintain a sense of sovereignty from each other in spite of the collaboration.
Political globalization is more
of a movement toward
multilateralism characterized
by collaboration.

ADVANTAGES AND
DISADVANTAGES
OF POLITICAL
GLOBALIZATION

ACCORDING TO NETIVIST.ORG
ADVANTAGES
- Access to international aid and financial
support
- It contributes to world peace
- It reduces risk of invasions, more checks
on big powers and limitation on
nationalism
- International organizations are often
committed to spread values like freedom
and to fight abuses within countries
- Smaller countries can work together and
gain more influence internationally
- Governments can learn from each other
DISADVANTAGES
- State sovereignty is reduced
- The functioning of international and
supranational organizations is often not
“democratic” in terms of representation
and accountability
- Big countries can shape decisions in
supranational organizations
- Sometimes countries can veto decisions
and slow down decision-making
processes
- Coordination is difficult and expensive

Political globalization can be seen to the Pedra Branca
dispute between Singapore and Malaysia, where the issue
was brought up to the International Court of Justice (ICJ),
the principal judicial organ of the UN. In this way, a third and
neutral party helps to solve the matter, reducing probable
biasness which may arise if the two countries tried to settle
this issue among themselves. (National University of

However, and regardless of
our attitudes toward
political globalization, it is
our moral responsibility, as
proponents or opponents;
individuals or groups; NGOs
or governments, to rethink
its process in a manner that
enhances its advantages
and reduces or eradicates
its negatives.
