The following tal of the samurai. the knights of old Japan. are based larC' lyon real facts, They have been

adapted from among traditional stories related by kodall-

ski, story-tellers, \V 0 nightly delight large audiences with romances and h storical stories, especially the noble deeds of the samurai, There are also numerous Japanese books and rna lines devotd to stories of this description, which are r d with keen interest by all classes of our countrymen, i particular by young people.

It is true the sam rai class has gone forever along with feudalism; but ~ rtunately or unfortunately the Japa_nese at large are sam rai in a sense. During the last half century European ci ilization has revolutionized Japanese society, both for be r and for worse. In institutions political and social, i manners and customs, in arts and literature) the Japan have lost many of their characteristics; yet it may safely be said that the sentiments,

motives and moral principles of the samurai in some measure remain. in the bedrock f their character, in their subconsciousness, so to spe k. The Japanese of

to-day are intellectually almost co rnopolitans, but emo-

tionally ·they are still samurai to n small degree.

Honest Kyiisuke, the hero of th story of the same title, was not a samurai. but his rinciples were those of a. samurai. Let that justify the inclusion of the story in this volume.
