CHAPTER ONE

Introduction

In this generation, millennials are mostly influenced by the

use of social media. Social media plays a major role in this

modern society. It allows and enables users to communicate in a

more convenient way, share content and create online communities.

However, with its relevancy to millennials, there are good and

bad effects in using social media. What are the advantages and

disadvantage of using different social media platforms? Does it

affects especially student’s behavior or the way it acts and

behave?

This matter should be determined using careful judgments and

fair distribution of opinions about the benefits and influences

of using social media. The researchers’ aims to provide

information not only to the teachers, millennials or students

involved in the research, but for them to comprehend the ethics

and responsibility of using social media websites, and

application. With the continuous and dynamic rising of

technology, one should be disciplined and responsible in using

the application of science knowledge for practical purposes.

Social media is where most students now spend their time for

entertainment. Most of their time is consumed in using different

famous applications like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube,

and etc.

It is where they share contents and common interest. They

create online communities using their personal accounts. With the

community they are belonged, there might be influences that

affects their social behavior. They tend to braver when sharing

opinions and thoughts online than in actual life. Different word

terms and fashion trends also changes their behaviors or actions

and the way how they wanted other people to see them as they are.

Though influences develops and helps them discovered knowledge,

it sometimes also leads to manipulating their perspectives. It

can control the way how they think. Not all contents online that

they happened to read, watch or sway along with offers a standard

of right behavior.
Background of the Study

Social Media are websites and applications that enable to

create and share content or to participate in social networking.

This research aims to provide information’s about the effects of

social media to the students social behavior. With the

disadvantages of social media, the researcher wants to determine

if it changes the way in which one acts or conducts oneself,

especially towards others. It has been said that social media is

one of the greatest weapon to influence how millennials act or

think. This matter should be scrutinized or examined carefully

especially in critical way. This research will use or involve

careful judgment about the good and bad effects of having social

media as sources, where people usually communicate, make things

convenient and as a field of entertainment.

Thesis Statement

The students tend to voice out, or post to be exact their

status, feelings and emotions in social media, that instead of

facing it right at themselves or talking to someone especially

their parents and friends to solve it out or ease the current

situation, they’d rather rant and do something more that is often

out of control and rid by their affections.

Thus, students also feel somehow that they are relieved and

sociable to others by what they are having at the moment when

they post their existing situation.

Statement of the Problem

1. What are the factors that leads students to indulge

more in social media?

2. How does the students interact to their peers when

they are using social media?

3. What are the effects of social media to the social

behavior of the students?

CHAPTER TWO

Review of Related Literature

Today’s world is a global village. Everyone is connected to

one another in this vast network generated by the internet. In

the past, the communicating and free sharing of thoughts among

people were restricted by long distance, nationality and/or

religion. But now even these barriers cannot stop the flow of

information and knowledge. The new world of social media allows

free sharing of thoughts. Online social media are created by

websites such as Facebook, which has emerged as a giant in this

social world.

Another aspect of change impacted by social media is the

evident accessibility of knowledge. Laurie (2010). It is easier

to seek knowledge through popular search engines and it offers

advancement in the literacy level of children. Everyone can be as

knowledgeable as a person speaking in front of his/her students.

And also, social media affects the way we write and speak the the

written word. Shermann (2010). Writing is more brief because of

the limited character spaces in famous social media apps like

Facebook and Twitter.

According to Zaidieh (2012), “Social Network Sites (SNS)

became one of the useful tools for everyday life especially in

education that gave benefits to both teachers and students.” As

technology is highly advanced, school institutions used it as an

opportunities for educators and instructors to facilitate a very

strong sense of community within students and encourages to gain

new knowledge and could have intelligence by personal

interactions.

Boyd and Ellison, (2010)noted that social network sites

allowed users to create public and private profile which they are

enable to interact with other people in the same network. It is

for every individual to experience socializing or interacting

towards people who have the same network, interests or even

people who they haven’t met. It is also helped people to be open

and have confidence on themselves. It is to connect with others

despite of differences in culture, traditions, beliefs and

religions.

Social media increases social interactions and allows easy

communication between families, friends, neighborhoods and global

communities. Most social medias incorporate lots of communication

tools like mobile connectivity, blogs, photos, and video sharing

which allows cross-pasting to each other as desired by users,

Merchant (2012). It allows every individual to communicate or

interact to their loved ones despite of their long distance. It

makes every person’s relationship to their families or friends,

stronger and still has this connection before she/he went far

away. It could also be everyone’s photo album as users can stare

their happy moments or even sad moments on their accounts.

According to Bryant and Bryant (2005), “The internet

possesses the capability to influence our young adults and

students behavior very easily.” Users like young adults and

students could be easily influenced as they get distracted and

thought that it’s good for them.

Social behavior is and indispensable constituent of social

psychology that can either be positive or negative, Bertram

(2009). It categorizes acts that influences users through social

media.
According to Bertram (2009), “Social behavior consists of

social determinant such as attitude, self-concept, collaboration,

communication, violent behavior and conflict reduction.”

Therefore, positive and negative effects to social behavior is

also divided as to how we view what we read or watch contents. It

is not purely the use of social media that is getting out of

control, but our need to be electronically connected at all

times, Ranch-Anderson (2012). We are used to communicating online

and it really make things easier. However, it is not only the

social media to be blamed for getting negative influences from

but also the way how use and let it manipulate our perspectives.

Social networks maybe harmful or have undesirable things

that we may feel such as anger, sadness or happiness but still

could make us feel the happiness, love, altruism and valuable

information, Kasteter (2010). It depends on how we use it. We

should consider our responsibility as social media users. Social

media offers good opportunities and it is only right to use it

with good intentions.
