CONTEXT

Communication is a two-way channel. It is achieved when two individuals share

information whether through verbal or non-verbal cues. Communication is a core skill
in health care professionals because this enables them to communicate effectively
with the clients. It is also where doctors and nurses build relationships with patient and
their families. Validation on the other hand puts more focus on the emotional aspect
of the conversation and less on the factual content, thus giving respect to the person,
their feelings and their beliefs. The videos present different techniques in managing
an effective and therapeutic communication that we, as part of the health care team,
needs to highlight as this may help us in achieving a healthy relationship with our
clients.

EXPERIENCE

My experience in communicating with quite a few older patients in my clinical

exposure were not easy. It was kind of difficult to have an effective communication
considering that they usually have trouble hearing me well. In home, we live together
with my grandmother in one roof and she is now 86 years old. She manifests the usual
characteristics of an older person as she is easily irritated and quite deaf already. By
watching the videos regarding communication, I have come to realize certain effective
ways to manage in talking with older people that I can apply in our home.

REFLECTION

Basing on the inspirational speech of Ms. Naomi on Validation Technique, it

was really moving, and I was able to ponder a few thoughts about how elder people
communicate with other individuals. In one of her statements saying, “feelings that are
expressed and validated with empathy are relieved”, I learned that older people are
vulnerable with their feelings, thus it is important to interact with them in a gentle
manner and put more emphasis and consideration on their emotions as well.

ACTION

In applying this in our home and in the clinical setting in the future, I am now
able to apply these values regarding in giving care to older patients. In this way, I can
provide a therapeutic and effective relationship with my grandmother and my clients
soon. I will also put in mind that people are not the same as the other, so it is also
important to note how to manage individuals based on their behavior and preference.

EVALUATION

Overall, the lecture about Communication and Validation really helped me in a

way that I was able to realize what are my actions before that must have been
corrected if I knew these techniques sooner in giving therapeutic communication.
