Introduction

One word from God can forever change your life. As Jesus said, “It is
written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word
that proceeds from the mouth of God.’” Matthew 4:4 We not only
need the written word of God in the Bible; but we also need the ever
proceeding word from God’s mouth. The spoken word of God is where
He opens our eyes and ears through the Spirit revelation; so the
word really impacts our heart and lives. God is always speaking we
just need to get closer and listen to what He is saying to us. God is
still speaking today as He has never stopped speaking, as His word
says, I am the Lord I change not (Malachi 3:6)

Revelation 19:10 “….For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of

prophecy”
All true prophecy is supposed to be there to bring forth the testimony
of Jesus in and through our lives.

What is prophecy?

A prophecy is a word from the Lord. One of the most valuable gifts
we can receive from Him, is His word spoken into our lives. Each
word God speaks is a thought of love from Father’s heart. These
words can contain encouragement, promise, direction, instruction,
guidance, foretell the future, warning etc. A prophecy can contain
scripture, a vision, a word, a dream, an interpretation, and any

2
combination of these, and many other different ways. All prophecy
should have foundations in His love aim to glorify Jesus.
Prophecy is Gods way of speaking to man and sharing the things that
are on His heart. (Amos 3:7)

What is the purpose of the prophetic?

According to 1 Corinthians 14:1-3, it is to edify, exhort and to

comfort. Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially
2
that you may prophesy. For he who speaks in a tongue does
not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him;
3
however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries. But he who
prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to
men.

A prophetic word can encourage you when you feel weak, alone or
tested. It can direct you for the path ahead. It can instruct you to do
or not to do something, and many other things. Prophecy is diverse,
and we should never limit God in what way He would speak to us.
Also read 1 Corinthians 12.

1 Corinthians 14:26 How is it then, brethren? Whenever you

come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a
tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things
be done for edification. Whatever we do should be to the
edification of those we fellowship with.

3
A prophet’s reward

The Lord sends people along our path all of our lives. Each one has
gift from the Lord for us. We need to always ask the Lord, what is the
gift you have sent me? The Lord has placed the five fold ministry in
the church to develop the church into the fullness of Jesus and to
equip them to do the ministry of Jesus (See Eph 4:11-16). We need
to accurately discern whether the person God has sent us is a
prophet, a teacher, an apostle, an evangelist or a pastor. When we
do this we will be able to receive the gift and reward of that gift. If
we receive a prophet as a teacher then we will only be able to receive
teaching and not prophetic ministry. Not everyone who prophesy’s is
a prophet. This not their title they might call themselves but it is the
gift and anointing the Lord has placed upon their lives. The Lord
desires that all believers prophesy – (See 1 Cor 14:5,31)

What is a vision?

God gives people a gift to see visions and dream dreams. God has
also raised up seer prophets who prophecy primarily through the gift
of seeing coupled with the gift of prophecy. Daniel was a Seer
prophet, and so was Ezekiel. When the heavens were opened then
Ezekiel saw visions of God. Ezekiel 1:1. Some prophets only prophecy
words and not visions. Just because you see visions does not
mean you are a prophet.

4
A vision is a picture, a moving picture, a few pictures following one
another, or a “movie”. This means for example that God can show
you:
• an apple
• a growing apple
• a seed, and then a tree and then an apple ( different separate
pictures)
• or a movie about the apple growing and developing into
another scene etc.

If God has given you the gift to see visions, then depending on the
level you’re at, and on what God is trying to tell you, you will see
either one of these. Other levels of the seeing & the prophetic are
impressions, dreams, 3rd heaven experiences, being caught up,
leaving your body, trance etc.
Jesus came to open the eyes of the blind the close you are to Him the
more you will see and hear. He gives more revelation to the hungry
and thirsty. Jesus saw He whole ministry – He say each day we are
all called to see with the eyes of our spirit what the Lord is doing. He
said, John 5: 19-20 Then Jesus answered and said to them,
“Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of
Himself, but what He sees the Father do; for whatever He
20
does, the Son also does in like manner. For the Father loves
the Son, and shows Him all things that He Himself does; and
He will show Him greater works than these, that you may
marvel. If we are to walk Jesus then we need to see more and more
each day so we can walk and follow Him as He did see and follow his
Father.

5
Here are some scripture references for you to study: Gen 31:33;
Ezekiel 1:1; Dan 1:17; Gen 15:1; Acts 2:17; Acts 11:5; Acts
9:10;26:19; 2 Cor 12:2+4; Rev 4:1-2 and many more.

Does God only speak through prophets?

No! God can speak in many, many ways. A prophet is one way, but
you do not need to BE a prophet in order to hear the Lord or see
visions and dream dreams. Prophets are not just called to prophesy
but are called to help others hear His voice and prophesy.
God can speak through the bible, through nature, through a thought,
through books, through people, through your pets, through children,
through ideas – He is a creative God and the ways He will speak to us
are endless!
Preferably one would be baptized in the Holy Spirit in order to
prophesy. However, it is not a requirement as God can speak through
anyone. For example someone that is not saved, or even a donkey
(Num 22:28)

How do I know the word I received is from the Lord?

A true word from the Lord will always point to Jesus, and will line up
with the Bible. Anything that does not bring life, peace and joy, could
either be from the 1st or 2nd heaven.

6
John 1:1-2 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was
2
with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning
with God.
Jesus is the word and He is foundation. Our foundation is the
scripture, God talks to you through scripture. The word of God is our
final authority as believers. Remember He will never give you a
prophecy that contradicts scripture.

First we need to check to see if the Lord is speaking. There are a

number of ways for doing this. We are called to test the prophetic
word. 1 Corinthians 14:3,29. We are to not despise prophecy. 1
Thessalonians 5:20.
1. Does the word witness with the Holy Spirit who is our teacher.
Jesus said, my sheep know My voice the voice of a stranger
they will not follow. He never said, lambs but sheep know His
voice. As we mature we will be able to discern the voice of God
clearer and clearer. The nature of a sheep is humility that
follows the shepherd. The more humble we become the easier
it is for us to hear His voice. Luke 10:21-24. Remember God
can speak things to you that you might not like to hear and
that wont “witness” or “agree” with what you believe. His word
challenges our false beliefs/paradigms. The key is to see
whether the prophecy lines up with the scriptures or not. His
word also leads us into repentance.
2. Is the word in line with the word of God? It doesn’t have to be
contained word for word in the scripture; but it must not be
against the truth of the whole of Gods word. E.g. God is holy He
will not speak to us and tell us to steal or break His own

7
command. The key command is love. We check all words
against the template of love, if it fits in then we know it could
be from Him. 1 Corinthians 13:4-8
3. Does the word help us to get closer to Jesus and do His will for
our lives? “….The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.
Rev 19:10, Luke 24:27, John 5:39
4. Is the word confirmation? Has the Lord already spoken to us
about this before?
5. Is the word revelation? What is the point of a prophetic word if
it is always confirming something God has already said. Surely
it can bring new insight and understanding. Those in the dark
need light. If we already have light why would God need to say
it again? Sometimes it can be confirmation to us; but
sometimes it is also revelation – new to us. When it is
completely new then wait on the Lord to confirm this word.
Don’t just reject a word, because you have never heard it
before. Take time and wait on the Lord if it is from Him just
stay open to Him to confirm it. If it is not from Him your will
just forget about it.
6. Does the word either edify you or exhort (prod, prick) or
comfort you? 1Cor14:3. Does it convict you? Does the word
judge you? Does it reveal the secrets of your heart? These can
all be different manifestations of prophecy. 1Cor 14:24-25,
7. What realm is the word from - 1st, 2nd and 3rd heaven?
a. It is very important that you discern the source of a
prophetic word that you yourself receive. You need to
learn to discern whether it comes from 1st, 2nd or 3rd
heaven.

8
b. 1st heaven is our realm, the skies that we see, the clouds.
It is also our personal/carnal mind and thoughts. These
are our own soulish visions and dreams and imaginations.
The source of these words is not from the Lord.
c. 2nd heaven is the realm where the principalities and
powers of darkness rule and reign. This is satan’s
kingdom. These visions and words bring forth fear and
don’t provide a solution. They only show us the thoughts
and plans of satan. We need to press higher into the third
heaven into Father’s heart to see His plans and purposes.
Always ask what is Jesus doing? As we can only do what
we see Him doing (John5:19).
d. 3rd heaven is the kind of experience John the revelator
had. (Rev 1). It is the realm where God reigns, the realm
where we see angels, heaven, Jesus’ face etc. These
visions bring forth faith and life in our hearts. They
provide solutions not just problems. We should ask what
is Jesus doing in each revelation. Ask, where is Jesus in
this? John 5:19
8. Beware of idols in you heart. Ezekiel 14:2-11,21-23. If we have
some idol God might then send a person to prophecy the idol
into our lives. This is a form of judgement. For example if we
are lusting after something, a person with a prophetic gift that
operates in the second heaven can pick up this desire (idol) in
the soul and prophecy it back to you. Idols are things in our
lives that are more important than God.

9
What should you do with the word you received?

Once you have established that the word is from the Lord you need to
do something with it.

A word from the Lord (prophetic word) is a pearl that He chose to

give you. It is of great value and given from His heart, to yours.
We must remember that satan is a thief, and comes to steal the word
that has just been sown in our hearts. This means that he will come
with doubt, unbelief, fear or whatever else to get you to not believe
in the word that God has spoken. Study Mark 4:1-20 to see how
satan steals Gods word from us.

a. Interpretation:
i. It is critical to get an accurate interpretation for the
dreams and vision God gives you before you act on them.
ii. All interpretation of Scripture, visions and dreams
belongs to God.
iii. Just because you get a vision for someone doesn’t
mean God will give you the interpretation although He can.
He can use other in the fellowship to give them the
interpretation. Interpretation of visions is also a gift from
God.
iv. Use scripture as your main guide to interpret
visions and dreams. When interpreting, focus on the main
details/theme of the vision – those things that really stand

10
out in the vision. The theme of a vision is one of the first
thing you see, the theme can contain several messages.
v. Timing: one of the hardest things to interpret is
timing, often you can receive things so clearly it feels that it
will happen now; and later you find out it was meant for ten
or even twenty years later.
b. The Mary and Zacharias examples.
i. Only Believing, establishes the prophecy:
When the angel appeared to Mary and prophesied
to her about Jesus. She immediately believed the word and
accepted the word into her heart after hearing it. Then Mary
said, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me
according to your word.” …Luke 1:38. We need to believe
the words if they from the Lord we need to believe so that
we will conceive the word as Mary did. As we believe the
prophetic word the word comes alive in our hearts like the
seed in a womb. Your spiritual womb is your heart. We now
need to water this seed and keep the weeds out. Luke 1:26-
38,45. “Blessed is she who believed, for there will be a
fulfillment of those things which were told her from the
Lord.” V45
ii. Doubt will wipe the prophecies out: When the
angel of the Lord appeared to Zacharias he never believed
the word. For this he was struck mute until John the
Baptist’s birth. The Lord closed his mouth so that he would
be able to cancel Gods plan with his doubt coming out of his
mouth. By this time He had learnt not to doubt and started
to prophesy over John.

11
c. Have faith and make war with you prophetic word
We are called to use our prophetic word to wage war with. We are
not called to just sit with them, but we are called to believe, pray
over them and proclaim them out loud over our lives. The bible
says, write the vision. (Hab 2:2). This means that God asks of us
to write down these words, and then make war with our
prophecies.
i. This charge I commit to you, son Timothy,
according to the prophecies previously made
concerning you, that by them you may wage the good
warfare, 1 Tim 1:18.
ii. Believe the word and confess it over your life aloud.
Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God.
Rom 10:17
iii. The power of life and death is in our mouths. When
God created the universe He spoke then He saw it was good.
We need to speak it out with faith and create the future with
our mouths. Mark 11:23. What ever we say, believing we
will receive. We are to speak too, our mountains not about
them.
iv. Be very careful to only speak that which God says.
The moment you speak fear or word of negativity over what
God has prophesied life. For this reason a whole generation
died without entering the Promised Land. See Hebrews 3 &
4.
v. Enter your inheritance through TPW. Take your
words and TPW (Thank; Praise; Worship) Him over them.
We need to do this daily of as often as possible. This means

12
you take the words He gives you and actively demonstrate
your faith by loud and passionate TPW – Thanksgiving –
Praise – Worship. See Psalm 149; 2 Chron 20:13-30
d. Have patience
i. Through faith and patience we will inherit the
promises of God. Heb 6:12
ii. One of the most difficult and painful things is
waiting for word to come to pass. Sometimes God can give a
prophetic word that can take months or even years to come
to pass. This does not mean the word wasn’t from the Lord.
We must stand in faith, believing that He has spoken, and
that He is faithful. (Rom 4:20; Heb 10:23)
iii. Normally the opposite will happen that was
prophesied this is a test of faith; to see if you will really
believe. We see once the word is spoken that satan will
come immediately to steal Gods word with: 1. Doubt 2.
Lust for other things 3. Worries and cares of the world. 4.
Desire for riches. 5. Tribulations. See Mark 4:1-20
iv. Patience takes time to develop. As your faith is
tested, it produces Patience. James 1:3
e. Obedience is the key to walking into your
inheritance: Many people think that if they get a word it will
automatically come to pass. Most prophetic words we receive are
conditional of our faith and obedience. As we obey this opens the
door for the prophetic word.
i. Isaiah 1:19 Says; If you are willing and obedient,
You shall eat the good of the land.

13
ii. Jesus is our pattern and model, whom we follow, He
said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, the Son can do
nothing of Himself, but what He sees the Father do;
for whatever He does, the Son also does in like
manner” John 5:19 Jesus’ entire ministry came out of what
He saw.
iii. Obey the vision God gives you as Paul did, see Acts
16:9-10 And a vision appeared to Paul in the night. A
man of Macedonia stood and pleaded with him, saying,
“Come over to Macedonia and help us.” 10 Now after he
had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go to
Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to
preach the gospel to them. Then again in Acts 26:19
“Therefore, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the
heavenly vision”
iv. If the prophetic word concerns a specific person or
group of people, it is also conditional of them being
obedient. Look at Joshua, he had to wait forty years for all
the unbelieving Israelites to die off before he could inherit
the Promised Land. People around might causes delays to
fulfillment of word in your life but they cannot stop them as
God will remove them or move you on.

Conditional on the will

A prophetic word is always conditional on the will of the person who

the word is for. This means that the word can be from the Lord, but if

14
the person who it is for does not receive it, believe it, or does not
want to do it, or whatever other reason, the word will not come to
pass. Do not lose heart if people do not obey the prophetic words
given to them, God gives each of us a free will, to obey or disobey.
He will not force anyone to follow Him and enter into their
inheritances.

What must I do to see visions/dreams and receive

prophetic words myself?

According to the word, all are called to prophesy, yet not all are
prophets.
Hearing Gods voice is one of the most important pursuits of a disciple
of Jesus. To do this we need to get closer to the Lord each day. You
need to spend quality time with Him each day. We have great tools to
help you in this regard called the Hour of Power and the Divine
encounter.

The closer you are to the Lord the more you will see and hear for
yourself and others. We are all called to friends of God, God shares
His secrets with His friends – John 15:14-15 “You are My friends if
15
you do whatever I command you. No longer do I call you
servants, for a servant does not know what his master is
doing; but I have called you friends, for all things that I heard
from My Father I have made known to you”

15
The more you drink of His word the more your eyes will be opened,
also your faith will grow and as your faith grows so will your spiritual
eyes, the eyes of your heart be opened.

Spending time in His manifest presence is an ideal environment for

those with the gift to see visions etc to see. To really see even more,
you need open heavens over you and your prayer team - Ezekiel 1:1.
To open the heaven you need walk in agreement with heaven, in
agreement on earth. Learn to enter and abide in His manifest
presence. Cultivate an atmosphere for the Holy Spirit to flow. Allow
Him to flow even if this means people make mistakes, He will help
each person to get up and follow His flow.

Encounter of the supernatural kind

As with everything, we always need to see the source. There are

three possible sources:

1. from the Father of Light

a. These visions and experiences will always focus on the
word of God or refer back to it. They will bring us closer
to Jesus, and will be filled with His love, and comfort.
Where there is correction, and sorrow, it will always lead
us to repentance. Coming back to our relationship with
the Lord. Everything He sends to us, whether angels,
people, messages will always be with that purpose, to
draw us closer and to set us free from the darkness.
2. from the father of lies

16
a. The father of lies is always out to deceive us, and
therefore can only copy or counterfeit what God is
already doing or has already done. No matter what the
experience we may have, we must discern the source. In
this case, there wont be peace, but only fear and unbelief
attached to the message or the experience. no matter
how supernatural it is, we must always test the spirits to
see whether they are from God or not. The word of God
says the devil can appear as an angel of light 2 Cor 11:14
And no wonder! For Satan himself transforms
himself into an angel of light John 10:10 The thief
does not come except to steal, and to kill, and to
destroy. I have come that they may have life, and
that they may have it more abundantly
3. from our soul
a. We often get experiences and dream that originate in our
soul. This can be just a way of our soul trying to process
our daily lives and experiences. We always need to
discern whether it is lining up with the truth of Gods word
or not.
