“Planting a New Generation of Agripreneurs”
T
What is the Problem?
According to the Asian Farmers Association for Sustainable Rural Development (AFA), many
young people in Asia have little respect for farming as an occupation. For them, agriculture is not a
lucrative and ideal form of livelihood. Consequently, there is a growing concern worldwide that as more
youth become disenchanted to farming and as our farmers are getting older, particularly in the Philippines
wherein the average age of farmers is 57 years old, food security and economic problems may worsen in
the future.
What is
Project Cultivate?
Project Cultivate is the joint program of Kapisanan ng mga Kabataang
Magsasaka sa Pilipinas (KKMP) and the Department of Agriculture (DA) that
aims on boosting the youth’s participation in agriculture. Due to the decreasing
involvement of youth in the agricultural sector, KKMP and DA decided to create a
project that will increase their awareness regarding agriculture and its importance
in employment, food security, and economic growth. Under this project, KKMP
and DA will hold a three-day event that is composed of seminars, exhibits,
workshops, and farm visit. This event is to be done every end of the month at the
different regions in the Philippines. The three-day event is the main strategy of
KKMP and DA to realize the mission, vision, and objectives of the advocacy.
