Filipino nurses: The world's frontliners vs the coronavirus
1. By Rambo Talabong and Sofia Tomacruz

MANILA, Philippines – Life seemed normal, until it

wasn’t. Headlines blasted a new coronavirus had been
spreading in places across the world and after weeks of
sticking to daily routines, the virus covered over 190
countries and territories.

In cities where millions moved through daily, life ground

to a halt as people receded into spaces barricaded by
checkpoints. Streets and buildings, usually busy with
exchange, were left empty and hollow.

Hospitals and health care centers saw the exact

opposite where spaces were filled to the brim, patients
coming in faster than others could leave. Scenes of
cramped hallways and stadiums turned into makeshift
hospitals flooded screens for days too many to count.

The cases climbed, along with death tolls, afflicting

young and old alike.

In many of these spaces, faces of Filipino health

workers hidden behind a series of masks tended to the
sick. Government data shows about 92,700 Filipino
nurses migrated from the Philippines to work in other
countries from 2012 to 2018. Their numbers add to the
hundreds of thousands already overseas for over a
decade.

In epicenters and high-risk spaces, Filipino far from

home are thrust to serve on the front lines of the
pandemic, scared and anxious, but bound by duty to
care for those most vulnerable.

PH consulate lauds Filipino frontliners’ heroism

The Philippine Consulate in Dublin has paid tribute to Filipino frontline workers in
Ireland for their heroism and for making a difference amid the threat of the
coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic to their own safety.

On its official Facebook page, the consulate cited as an example Xyrcyll Doriman, a
young Filipina nurse from Kapalong, Davao Del Norte who just recently moved to
Ireland and is now working at Cork University Hospital (CUH).
3. Why are the tasks of frontliners stressful?
“When I was in nursing school, I never imagined being on the fronline and in direct
contact with infected patients in a pandemic. COVID 19, the most serious health
crisis of our time, reminds me of my vital role as a nurse,” Doriman said.

Doriman admitted that the past four weeks have been mentally draining for
frontliners like her, sometimes overwhelmed by the emotional complexities of
taking care of their patients.

“I fear of falling ill with COVID-19 and losing my life on the frontline. At the same
time, I also need to step in providing emotional support to my patients because

their families can’t come to the hospital,” she added

Despite the challenges, Doriman said she just keep her mental attitude positive by
not allowing her emotions to get in the way.

“I stopped reading news articles that only trigger worries and negative feelings,” she
said.
