I understand from the journalism.co.uk careers section, there is a position available for an
asset management correspondent, required to work across Investment Week’s website
magazine. I would very much like to be considered for this role. I am a Politics graduate and
have recently completed a Masters degree in Journalism at Kingston University.
The opportunity to work to the magazine reporter and news editor Hannah Smith would be an
ideal way to build on my career in journalism.

I have a good knowledge of government economic policy from reporting on Lords debates for
on EU finance and the bailout of the Greek banks for ePolitix.com. I believe this is useful for
writing about asset management, as the political decisions made in parliament, such as the
recent VAT rise can all affect customers ability to spend money on assets.

In my spare time I try to write as much as possible. The economy has become so prevailant
since the recession; I have started writing about financial issues such as VAT. See my website
http://www.richardchidwick.com/2011/01/17/40/

I have gained useful journalistic experience writing for online publications, such as
politics.o.uk covering political issues in the run-up to the general elections, and when writing
news bulletins at FENS International News Service. I have also gained valuable experience at
local and national print publications, and I believe this has given me a wide perspective of the
journalist trade. Working at a broad variety of publications has enabled me to write for a
variety of readerships on an array of different issues. This gives me the confidence to succeed
at Investment Week and transfer my news-writing skills to your publication.

I developed solid news- and feature-writing skills on my Journalism MA course, through

intensive workshop-based classes. I can write accurate, concise copy and know how to
structure news stories and features. I can spot a good angle, am familiar with using house
style, and my role as Politics Editor for the MA student newspaper River Online has given me
solid experience of sub editing other students’ work.

I am currently working for Liberal Democrat MP Edward Davey as a case worker. Much of the

work I carry out is related to constituents and their financial situations. Case work tends to be
related to tax credits mortgages, and benefits. I understand that writing on asset
management would be advising your readership about where to put their money, as opposed
to local government finance, which is mainly dealing with constituents in financial trouble. I
feel that local government finance is useful to understand the financial situations people can
find themselves in.

I would very much like to bring my knowledge, skills and experience in journalism to
Investment weel, and make a useful and enthusiastic contribution to the team.

Many thanks for considering my application.

Kind regards
Richard Chidwick
