GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1. Explain why a patient might seek treatment from an OTC
drug instead of a more effective prescription drug.
-OTC drug agents can provide relief from many ailments
while saving consumers the expense and inconvenience of
visiting a prescriber. The following facts underscore how
important the OTC market is:
• Americans spend more than $30 billion annually on OTC
drugs.
• OTC drugs account for 60% of all medications
administered.
• Forty percent of Americans take at least one OTC drug
every 2 days.
• Four times as many illnesses are treated by a consumer
using an OTC drug as by a consumer visiting a
prescriber.
With most illnesses (60% to 95%), initial therapy consists
of self-care, including self-medication with an OTC drug.
• The average home medicine cabinet contains 24 OTC
preparations.

2. What is the difference between therapeutic and

pharmacologic classifications?
-As nouns the difference between pharmacology and therapeutics
is that pharmacology is (medicine) the science that studies the
effects of chemical compounds on living animals, especially the
science of the manufacture, use and effects of medicinal drugs
while therapeutics is (medicine) the treatment of disease; the
science of healing. The therapeutic classification is a method of
organizing drugs based on their therapeutic usefulness in treating
particular diseases. The pharmacologic classification refers to how an
agent works at the molecular, tissue, and body system levels.
Identify the following classifications as therapeutic or
pharmacologic:
• Beta-adrenergic blocker -pharmacologic class
• Oral contraceptive-Therapeutic class
• Laxative-therapeutic class
• Folic acid antagonist-Pharmacologic class
• Anti-anginal agent-Therapeutic class
GUIDE QUESTIONS:
3. Why are certain drugs placed in schedules? What does the
nurse need to know when a scheduled drug is ordered?
-As nurses we must follow the PRN Protocol exactly when giving a PRN
medication. A PRN protocol is needed for PRN medication orders
because, unlike medications that are ordered on a regular daily basis, you
have to know when a PRN medication should be given.
The PRN protocol will include:
• All of the information found in the medication order, plus:
• The specific signs and symptoms that the medication should be given
for
• A maximum daily dosage
• Any special instructions, such as when to call a nurse or the prescribing
practitioner
4. A pharmacist decides to switch from a trade-name drug that
was ordered by the health care provider to a generic equivalent
drug. What advantages does this substitution have for the
patient? What disadvantages might be caused by the switch?
-A generic medicine works in the same way and provides the same
clinical benefit as its brand-name version. In other words, you can take a
generic medicine as an equal substitute for its brand-name counterpart.
Generic drugs also tend to cost less than their brand-name
counterparts because generic drug applicants do not have to repeat
animal and clinical (human) studies that were required of the brand-
name medicines to demonstrate safety and effectiveness. This is why
the application is called an “abbreviated new drug
application.” This, together with competition between the brand-
name drug and multiple generic drugs, is a large part of the reason
generic medicines cost much less. The advantages that this
substitution have for the patient is that it will likely to cost less for
the patient, and the fact that the name will remain the same, regardless
of which company makes the drug. However, because generic drug
formularies may be different, the inert ingredients may be somewhat
different and, consequently, may affect the ability of the drug to reach
the target cells and produce an effect.
GUIDE QUESTIONS:
5. Identify opportunities that the nurse has in educating,
administering, and monitoring the proper use of drugs.
-It will more likely to maximize good and better recovery of the patient
and minimizing harm. Drug is not ideal therefore no medication is ideal,
we mist exercise skill and care if treatment is to result in more good than
harm(Insert kan Suazo answer kaina sa zoom ya hehe)
