REFLECTION PAPER
Medical Ward – RLE Group 7

Guide Questions:
1. What skills and lessons have you learned?
2. What are your recommendations regarding the online learning system?
3. What can you say about all the sessions in during the past 4 weeks? Requirements? Schedule? Clinical
instructor?
4. Is there anything else you wish to say to improve the teaching and learning situation in a remote session?

During the first week of my Related Learning Experience, I had to adjust because it was hard for me to
attend classes in Zoom using my phone. I was also not used to having classes at home because I do my chores
when I am at home. In school, during RLE, I can usually focus more on the lessons discussed and when I can
get to practice the procedures in the skills laboratory. I addressed this concern to my parents, and they agreed to
buy me a new personal computer. After that, I was able to adjust more to my online learning. Maybe because I
can move and do tasks properly with the proper gadget/technology. The problem that I encountered next was
my internet connection. There were a few times where I was accidentally logged out in the middle of discussion
because of my poor internet connection. But because the learning modules were given by my clinical instructor
in advance, I can still go over through the lecture notes and not get left behind.

During the 2nd week and onwards of my RLE, I am already adjusted with how we do our classes. I have
learned different skills and procedures during our 4 weeks with Maam Darwina Halbi. The following skills
were learned and practiced to the best of my ability:

1. Blood Transfusion
2. Review on FDAR
3. Intravenous Therapy
4. Review on the Calculation of IV Solutions
5. Care of Patient with Pacemaker
6. Electrocardiogram Monitoring
7. Heart Abnormalities
8. Colostomy Irrigation and.
9. Caring of Patients with Colostomy

I had difficulties in learning these because I cannot practice it well since there is no skills lab in an online
learning system. So, I had to improvise and adapt to the new online learning system. I came up with a skills
laboratory at home and then asked for my nurse friends to donate extra medical equipment they have at home—
just so I can really experience doing the procedures firsthand, at the very least. The members of my family were
also very supportive in helping me setup a skills lab as well as my other nieces/nephews in volunteering as my
patient. During the other skills procedures, I opted to just recite the steps through a Zoom meeting—which is a
one-on-one meeting with Maam Halbi.

It is also my first time to be under the teaching of Maam Darwina Halbi. I can say that from the very start of
the class, she knows her way through the technologies she uses. She knows how to use the Zoom well and I can
also observe that she is very organized. She sends us the link to Zoom classes in advance. She is also flexible as
she can be reached right away through text or call in her phone number, through messenger, or through her
email address. I can say that Maam Halbi is very responsive to our queries and concern, so it was very easy to
work with her. I also appreciate that she is very understanding—especially when we get disconnected numerous
times during the zoom class. She also provides us with options just in case we were not able to catch up with the
lessons. For me, it was a great experience to become a student of Maam Halbi because she was also fun during
classes and makes jokes from time to time. She gives requirements that I believe will help boost our grades by
the end of the session. Overall, I had a great time in her class and it also helped that she was very kind,
understanding, and approachable. What I had in mind during her classes were only to focus how to learn the
lessons and I was not afraid to tell her my concerns because Maam Halbi is hands-down very approachable. Her
kindness is really appreciated especially during this transition to an online learning system.

With the schedule, we usually have our classes at 8am and we meet at a maximum of 4 hours a day
depending on the duration of the topic or if there are lessons that still needs to be discussed. We have our return
demo on a Friday, or a Saturday and we have the option to perform it in Zoom during a one-on-one meeting or
just submit a video.

In the recent pandemic and the transition of Ateneo de Zamboanga University to an online learning system,
many adjustments were made during this phase. I would just like to commend the institution for taking the dive
to move in an online learning setup. Not everyone may have the same feedback as I. Some may have other
negative comments or feedback, but I would personally like to look at the brighter side of this learning setup
and how much effort has been put just to be able to provide us with good education/learning system despite the
current situation. The College of Nursing also did a good job because as I learned, the faculty members
underwent intensive zoom mock classes, since most of the clinical instructors are of old age, and are not
familiar with the other technicalities—but that was never an excuse for them to learn and teach us properly with
the use of technology. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody because of all the joined efforts,
I did not have a really hard time during this online setup. Thank you!

To Maam Darwina Halbi, thank you so much for your efforts in teaching us! I really appreciate you even
with all the problems we encountered in this online learning setup from power interruptions, computer
malfunctions, and disrupted internet connection. Thank you Maam, for being super approachable and
understanding. Indeed, kindness can go a long way. I really wish to be under your class maybe next time in a
real class setup. God Bless!
