User Guide and Briefing Notes for the Classic

Series

We strongly recommend reading these notes to help you

understand the basics of your new Classic Series suitcase.
There are two models in this range, the PA (Powered) and
the AG (Non-Powered).

Firstly PA stands for Power Assisted – it is not self

propelling or remote control and has no traditional method
of control like a twist grip or control cable. It’s designed to
work on sensors in the handle and in the powered wheels
using torque not speed, so first thing to remember is ‘be
aware of the ground

The Classic Series PA case is in “GO MODE” when you - giving the option to use the case without power. When

For safety reasons when you pull the handle out of locked
mode you will need to keep upward pressure on the
handle release (black middle button) to release it beyond
the first lock mechanism.After this point the red light
is engaged and means your power assisted system is
activated.
Please note the power assistance only becomes
active when you have more than approx. 7Kg of
goods in the case.
Check the gradient and surface - if it’s steep or rough,
the intelligent torque control system will power the wheels
when the handle is tilted - it’s designed to power up only
when help is required not during every part of your
journey.The tilt switch/sensors only power the wheels at
certain angles - approximately between 15% and 35%.
If you accidentally drop the case or let go – don’t worry –
it won’t run away from you. In these instances, the case will
go beyond its ‘active’ angles, so no power will be delivered
to the motors.
The handle system is a completely innovative concept as it
balances most of the bulk of the case over the wheels,
rather like a wheel barrow. This system is called the
“Anti-gravity Handle” - solid and tough.When extended
we recommend only light handheld goods are placed on
the handle’s wishbone.
The handle system has pressure sensors at the base so if
loaded with heavy goods, your Classic Series PA case will
not function correctly.
The AG Series has all the features of the PA Series except is
is non-powered, making it a ligher case.
Please remember to lock the handle whilst your Classic
Series case is in transit from preventing the handle
accidentally coming out.
PLEASE NOTE - under NO circumstances should you place
babies, small children, or people on the handle, wishbone or
body of the case.

Series Series

The handle can be adjusted to three height levels

making it as comfortable for taller people as shorter.
This adjustment is made by lifting the catch in the
top/middle part of the handle grip. For air travellers,
there’s an override lock (sideways movement) to
ensure the handle remains in lock mode during
the flight.

Each time the case is used the chances are, it will

have been packed differently so be aware that the
case may handle slightly differently on different
terrains and gradients depending on where the
concentration of weight is.
It’s a bit of a learning curve, but you should soon
get used to the manner in which it operates.
The case has a lift position behind the handle to use
when the case is in an upright position (and the
handle is not extended) and there are feet on the
long side of the case so it can remain steady when
rested horizontally.
Classic Series PA Case
The power pack is a rechargeable 12v NiMH (Nickel
Metal hydride) pack and is located on the inside of
the case in the base.The electronic management
control system is located within the same compart-
ment, which is also large enough to store a second,
spare battery pack for really long journeys. As a rule
of thumb, given average use, the battery will last for
at least one mile.Therefore we recommend the
battery is charged overnight on arrival at your
destination using the supplied charger. Please only
use Live Luggage adapter/charger- check voltage/
current for compatibility.
You’ll note that the centres of the wheels don’t go
round – just the tyres.This is because your suitcase
doesn’t have motors and axles in the conventional
sense.We have employed ‘pancake motors’, which
means that the DC motors are built within the
wheels making the whole package extremely robust
and maintenance free.
How much does it weigh and how secure is it?
The Classic Series case is not a day bag but a tough,
long-lasting secure case- ideal for a heavy duty
traveller .The case when empty weighs 10.9Kg (PA)
8.9Kg (AG) which is roughly 3Kg more than the
average hard case of similar volume, but the concept
is that when loaded it feels like a bag that weighs only
3kg not 30Kg.
90% of all suitcases soft or hard sided use zips, metal
or plastic, which most thieves can break into in
seconds! So we deliberately designed the Classic
Series to be made from a special tough PC ABS
material (same as car bumpers which are injection
moulded), with no zips that simply slots together.
The Lock system used is our own unique tumbler
lock system - fully TSA recognised so you can set
your own individual number,Transportation Security
Administration has master keys and will ensure the
case is always locked after checking.

make your journey less stressful and safer,
therefore please read the information below.

Anti Gravity handle
The case is fitted with a unique patented Anti Gravity
handle that allows 85% of the total weight to be
transferred to the wheels, making your luggage vastly
more transportable and manoeuvrable.

fully if the latch is released before the handle reaches a distance
of 6cm from the case body.This is to prevent the handle being
fully opened accidentally. Should this happen, push the handle

The handle is easily deployed and adjusted in height by
depressing the latch within the handle grip (see below).
The unique locking mechanism allows for 3 height settings
to allow for personal requirements.

Latches
The case is equipped with a three point locking system.
In conjunction with the main TSA recognised lock
there are 2 extra latches, located on the top and bottom
of case, to give extra security and rigidity to your luggage.
Please see below for instructions on how to operate
these latches.

Live Luggage Security

The Live Luggage Classic Series comes fitted with a

3 way locking system.The master lock, which is
located on the main length of the case, is a TSA
recognised combination lock allowing access only
by you or approved security services.This in
conjunction with latches located at either end
keep the case securely shut.

Technical information on the Live Luggage
battery power pack
The rechargeable battery used on your Classic Series PA
Case is a Nickel-Metal Hydride cylindrical ten cell unit with
a battery management system built-in to the pack
Battery temperature range is 20±5°C, relative humidity is
65±20% and atmospheric pressure is 86-106Pa.
Avoid placing battery pack near fire, flame, heat supply and
leaving in direct sunlight. Also avoid battery pack from
becoming wet and anywhere moisture is an issue.
When you receive your new NiMH rechargeable batteries
or battery pack, you must charge them fully before the first
use.They may show full voltage and power required to
operate your device, but charging before you use them the
first time is still very important. Please note that for new
NiMH rechargeable batteries, it can take from three to five
charge and discharge (use) cycles before they reach their
peak performance.
Batteries - frequently asked questions
Q. How far will it go?
A. Under average conditions, using a combination of
inclines, uneven ground and flat surfaces you should see a
minimum of 2 hours battery life from a fully charged unit.
The level of charge in the battery and its operating time
may vary dependent on the weight of the case and the type
of ground that is encountered! (Our tests resulted with an
average distance of 1 3/4 miles with a 32 kg load)
Q. Does the power unit re-charge itself when in
use?
A. Yes - We have integrated a design feature that allows
the battery to have a level of re-charge when the case is
moving without the power being required (i.e. downhill
or on some flat surfaces.This is known as re-generation
mode.
Q. Does it have a separate charger?
A.We have included a separate charger (and multi-adaptor)
with every case.This charger must be used. Using other
types of charger can seriously damage the power cells.

At normal room temperature, NiMH rechargeable
batteries will generally lose about 1% of their charge per
day. Higher temperatures will increase this loss, and lower
temperatures (40-60F) will reduce this daily loss. This
“shelf life” is less of a factor if you use them within the first
five to ten days after they are charged.
One of the best ways to ensure that your NiMH recharge-
able batteries will last as long as possible is to use them
often. The more they are charged and used, the longer
NiMH rechargeable batteries will last. Whether discharged
or not, NiMH rechargeable batteries should be charged at
least every sixty days.
Q. Can I still use the power assisted luggage if the
battery is completely flat?
A.Yes - there is no gearing mechanism or transmission.The
case will act just as any normal case except with the anti
gravity handle and the large wheels your luggage will be
considerably easier to manoeuvre.We recommend that
you fully charge the batteries when you reach your
destination.
Q. How will I know when it needs re-charging?
A.There is a small red LED light which is on continuously
when the handle is in the 'engaged' position.This light will
go out when the battery needs re-charging.
Q. How does the battery unit comply with airline
and port authorities?
A.We have designed a switching device for when the
handle is disengaged i.e. in lock mode, which completely
isolates the battery unit from the control system making
it 100% secure.The latch on the Anti Gravity handle also
ensures that the handle does not open accidentally whilst
in transport mode.Your Classic Series PA Case can be
checked in through normal airport controls.

In excess of 3 MILLION bags a year are lost in transit world-

wide every year. Even more are misplaced or forgotten in
hotels, taxis, restaurants etc.Very often, they are never re-
united with their owners due to frail or missing name tags,
or they are just not clearly marked. Not only can the luggage

Every piece of Live LuggageTM is tagged with a laser etched
individual serial number.When you register your luggage
with us, we keep your details on our secure database.You
can always return to our website and keep the details updat-
ed if you change address or name.
In the event of your luggage not ending up at the same desti-
nation as you, airport staff, police or the finder can contact
us via the details embedded on the luggage. Our system then
matches the details with our registration database and then
generates an automatic email to you, the bag owner, plus a
text message to your cell phone giving details entered by the
bagfinder. It is then a simple matter of arranging collection!
Please note, however, that your details are safe with us and
we would NEVER divulge your information to a third party!

Pan-Cake Wheel Technology

Live Luggage Pan-Cake Wheels have been conceived

as ready to use controllable wheels.They incorporate
all of the electronics, the sensors and power
management systems to allow easy integration into
the Live Luggage application.

With built-in temperature and current monitors, the

wheel motors can be used with no further control
circuitry - simply supply the Live Luggage battery
pack 12vdc and a potentiometer to provide smooth
and controllable torque. (Fully rechargeable system)

Designed to handle the rigors of luggage handling, the

wheels can each support payloads of up to 32kg.
With a solid tyre and a cleverly designed flexible
wheel rim the wheels run smoothly over most
uneven surfaces.With inbuilt differential functionality,
they are ideal working in conjunction with the Anti
Gravity handle.

By careful use of magnetic and thermal modeling, Live Luggage has optimized
the trade offs between weight and efficiency to provide a durable and 'cool'
running lightweight wheel.
