LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET # 4.1.1

UNIT 4 MODULE 1 MOTION IN TWO DIMENSIONS
REVIEW OF BASIC TOPICS IN MOTION

Concept Notes:
• The mathematical quantities that are used to describe the motion of objects can be divided into two categories. The quantity is either
a vector or a scalar. These two categories can be distinguished from one another by their distinct definitions:
o SCALARS are quantities that are fully described by a magnitude (or numerical value) alone.
o VECTORS are quantities that are fully described by both a magnitude and a direction.
• Distance and displacement are two quantities that may seem to mean the same thing yet have distinctly different definitions and
meanings.
o DISTANCE is a scalar quantity that refers to "how much ground an object has covered" during its motion.
o DISPLACEMENT is a vector quantity that refers to "how far out of place an object is"; it is the object's overall change in position.
• Just as distance and displacement have distinctly different meanings (despite their similarities), so do speed and velocity.
o SPEED is a scalar quantity that refers to "how fast an object is moving." Speed can be thought of as the rate at which an object
covers distance.
o VELOCITY is a vector quantity that refers to "the rate at which an object changes its position."
• Formulas to be used:
𝐝 𝐝
𝐬= for speed 𝐭 = for speed 𝐝 = 𝐬𝐭 for distance
𝐭 𝐬
• Steps in Problem Solving
o Write the given in the problem.
o Write the required or the missing quantity.
o Write the correct formula to be used.
o Solve the problems with complete solution.
o Report your final answer up to two decimal places.
• Sample problems:

PROBLEM 1 PROBLEM 2
Nancy travelled a distance of 3,145 m by car in 52 s. Find the With a speed of 16.67 m/s, a train passes a pole in 24 s. Find
speed of the car. the length of the train.

Given: d = 3,145 m Required: s Given: s = 16.67 m/s Required: d

d t = 24 s Formula: d = st
t = 52 s Formula: s= t Solution:
Solution:
d d = st
s= m
d = (16.67 s )(24 s)
t
3,145 m 𝐝 = 𝟒𝟎𝟎. 𝟎𝟖 𝐦
s= 52 s
s = 60.480769 𝑚/𝑠
𝐬 = 𝟔𝟎. 𝟒𝟖 𝐦/𝐬

ACTIVITY SHEET. Part A.

Below are some quantities and classify them as SCALAR or VECTOR quantity. Identify also the quantity from the options given.
UNDERLINE THE CORRECT ANSWER.

QUANTITY CLASSIFICATION IDENTIFICATION

1. 15 m SCALAR | VECTOR DISPLACEMENT | ACCELERATION | DISTANCE

2. 45 m/s, east SCALAR | VECTOR VELOCITY | SPEED | FORCE
