1. Essay/Reaction about Tulfo Case:

-it is true that there are laws concerning to this matter, there’s some parts that I agree with the teacher and
some parts to the student-parents. In my own opinion, there’s nothing wrong with this type of laws but
there should be limitation. Limitation of how much a teacher can scold a student (use proper words and in
a calm manner) and a reasonable punishment. In my point of view, the way that the teacher punished the
student is not right specifically, the child’s brain is still developing and as the time passes by, children are
easily be affected emotionally and mentally now than in the past. Children in the past were used to heavy
punishments (which are, standing outside of the classroom, getting hit by a stick on the hand etc.) but it’s
way too different now. Probably due to lack of attention or concerns from the parents, kids nowadays are
easily get hurt and affected by words and actions of the people around them which might lead them to a
suicide attempt. Thus, this matter could affect the child’s mentality and behavior towards others in the
future.

The teacher could have talk to the child in a calm manner and reminded the child, if possible the teacher
should contact the parents/guardian and told them the problem. On other hand, the guardian/parents
should have talked to the teacher first before filing a case. It was used to say that “Schools serve as
second home to students while teachers serve as their second parents.” though I rarely hear this
nowadays. Thus, this is the reason why educational institutions act “in loco parentis” (in the place of a
parent). Teachers and administrators take on some functions and responsibilities of the parents when
children are in school. This reinforces the lesson the African proverb “It takes a village to raise a child”
wishes to convey. In other words, it is not the sole responsibility of the parents to cultivate the child to
become a good citizen, but the community’s responsibility. Though there should be limitations, there
should also be caring in both sides because they’re both responsible for the child’s safety and
development.

2. No Homework Policy:

-No Homework Policy is a big NO. Assigning homework to students cannot go without benefits. Thus,
children learn from the early age to manage their time and prioritize work activities. They also are getting
prepared to living in a world where they will be required to do some work after working hours (for
example, doing research). Additionally, there have been studies that tell us about positive impact of doing
home assignments on school performance, especially in older students. More to that, homework can be
challenging and interesting. It can facilitate critical thinking and social skills (extracurricular
collaboration of classmates). And since No home work policy is not applicable to college students, and
when the students are in college already, they will have hard time to adopt on doing homework since they
are NOT USED TO IT. And there some information that aren’t taught in schools that they can learn at
home but students won’t do any “research” if they’re not required to. Thus, Homework is an important
part in the life of a student.
