What’s the date today?

Learning Objective: To express dates in English correctly.

HOW DO WE SAY THE DATE IN ENGLISH?


First let’s revise some vocabulary! Be careful, these words all start with CAPITAL
LETTER!!
Exercise 1: Write the days of the week
1) MONDAY 5) FRIDAY________________

Exercise 2. Write the months of the year

In British English we write: “Thursday 7th November 2013” and we say:
Thursday, the seventh of November 2013

“Monday 2nd September 2013” Monday, the second of September 2013

But, in American English we write: “November, Thursday 7th, 2013”


and we say: November, Thursday the seventh 2013

 To answer the question: When were you born? We use ON before the date

We say: I was born ON the Twenty- second of July…

 As for the YEARS:


The years before 2000 are said in groups of two numbers:

-1789 17 / 89 : seventeen eighty-nine


-1956 19 / 56 : nineteen fifty-six

From 2000 to 2009 we use the cardinal numbers:

- 2001 two thousand and one


- 2008 two thousand and eight

But from 2010 on, we can hear both possibilities:


-2010 twenty ten / two thousand and ten
-2019 twenty nineteen / two thousand and nineteen

Exercise 5. How would you read these dates in British English?

Example:
