INTRODUCTION

• Global air quality has deteriorated progressively thus having a

negative impact on human health
• Issues such as “Sick Building Syndrome” & nosocomial
infections are well documented & legislation relating to Indoor
Air Quality (“IAQ”) is becoming more prevalent
• Airborne infections esp. measles, swine flu, TB, pneumonia are
significant disease threats that are escalating globally
• The potential knock-on effects of sick employees, clients,
healthcare workers, patients etc. represents a significant
direct and indirect financial burden to industry and
governments
FOCUS ON AIRBORNE INFECTION

• Transmission of airborne infections is becoming increasingly

important in the South African environment

• The incidence of TB and, in particular, MDR & XDR varieties is

has become a serious national issue

• Nosocomial infections are on the rise in both the private and

public healthcare sector

• The focus to date has been on surface cleaning and

sterilisation of instruments etc. but very little attention has
been paid to airborne pathogens apart from TB
THE TECHNOLOGY

• Air Revolution Technologies (Pty) Ltd. (“ART”) has developed

and patented a germicidal coating technology based on the
principal of Photo-Catalytic Oxidation (“PCO”)

• The key constituent is nano-scaled titanium dioxide

photocatalyst, which is activated by UV-C light (“UV-PCO”)

• UV-PCO utilising TiO2 is well documented as being highly

effective in eliminating airborne pathogens and volatile
organic compounds (“VOC’s”) incl. toluene, formaldehyde and
ethylene etc.

• ART’s core technology is a highly durable TiO2 coating which

can be applied to a wide variety of surfaces
PCO EXPLAINED
• PCO is effectively explained as the production of hydroxyl
radicals through the UV activation of a powdered semi-
conductor such as TiO2 which binds with organic
contaminanats thus rendering them inert
ART DEVICES
• The devices are based on a combination of UV-PCO & ionisation
in a unit containing low pressure fans to circulate the ambient
air:

• A TiO2 impregnated substrate is incorporated which, when

activated by UV light, produces hydroxyl radicals which
eliminate airborne pathogens & are potent VOC scavengers

• The high wattage UVC lamps are completely encased in the

unit thus preventing human exposure to harmful UVC rays.

• The units incorporate high capacity negative ion generators

with carbon fibre dischargers that effectively remove
airborne particles such as dust, allergens, sputum droplets
as well as VOC’s

DOES THE TECHNOLOGY WORK?
• The table below details examples of air testing done at various
sites before and after installation of ART devices:

• Consumers continue to report extremely favourable results

utilising the units in home, office and industrial environments
UNIT OPTIONS
• ART devices are currently available in 4 models:

TiV-U3

TiV-U4

TiV-UC1

TiV-UC3

• The units require servicing every 10,000 hours – replacement of

UV lamp and TiO2 substrate (more often in dusty environments)
• All components are CE approved, units are SABS approved & CE
compliant and are manufactured in an ISO accredited facility

*Coverage dependant on numerous factors including, but not limited to, ceiling height, layout, air flow and occupancy

OTHER APPLICATIONS
• An in-vehicle unit had been prototyped and is currently being
trialed for use in ambulances and public transport systems
(taxis, buses, trains etc.) where there is a high rate of cross-
contamination of airborne infections (see study by Strumer et
al)
• A retail unit for domestic application is in prototype phase and
will be ready for distribution by January 2011
• A mobile unit for larger areas has been prototyped and, due to
the nature of the technology, units can be scaled up to
accommodate areas of up 500m² or more
CONCLUSION

• Existing technologies e.g. “TB Lamps” are expensive to

acquire and run, can have a negative impact on people in their
environment and have varying levels of efficacy
• ART offers a novel, cost effective solution to address issues
relating to air contamination
• ART’s photocatalytic air purifiers are highly effective and cost
a fraction of that of traditional solutions to achieve equivalent
results
• The units have a broad spectrum of application in numerous
settings and are flexible and scalable
BREAKING NEWS

• ART is the exclusive supplier of devices to the FPD TB Clinic

initiative in Southern Africa. A new design of clinic has
recently been implemented & include 17 ART units per clinic

• the initial 10 clinics were completed during 2010 and a further

15 clinics are due for completion in 2011
