M&I modified 2 Nos. of ID & FD Fan Discharge Duct of 210 MW Bandel Thermal
Power Station. M&I’s design offered streamlining of flow and effective conversion of
velocity pressure in to static regain offering pressure drop reduction. Moreover M&I’s
aerodynamic diffusion system also eliminated air flow distribution problem in the two ID
fans.

Advantages of M&I’s innovative draft plant system for FD and ID fan advantages in
terms of performance, reliability and savings over existing systems is shown below:

Pressure Drop:
The total pressure drop savings across the FD fan discharge system with M&I design
would be offering 2” W.G. (50 mm WC) pressure drop savings at designed condition
over existing system. Above pressure drop reduction would provide WBPDCL an
increased fan flow or reduction in power consumption. ID fan discharge system will
provide you with an additional pressure drop saving of 1.75” W G (45 mm WC).
Every care has been taken to optimize flow pattern with minimal losses and waste of
energy through turbulence and flow induced vibration in the draft system. Savings
are achieved through converting unproductive velocity pressure to static pressure
regain and eliminating high velocity hot spots in air heater and duct elbows.

Analysis of Flow to ESP at Kolaghat Power Plant

The flow is not uniformly

distributed because of the
existing duct layout design.
M&I in its design will ensure that
the flow between the two is
uniformly distributed.

Non-uniform
flow
distribution

Pressure drop in case of

existing design (A-C) will
be approx. 1.5” W.G.
M&I expects to reduce
pressure drop by 0.4” –
0.6” W.G

In case of existing design

the RMS deviation of flow
into ESP is 28%.
M&I expects to reduce
RMS deviation from 8-
10%
