BIOLOGY SUMMARY
03. THE FLOWER 2019 – 20.

➢ Scope: Brief Introduction to complete and incomplete flower. Essential and non-
essential whorls of a bisexual flower, their various parts and functions. Inflorescence
and placentation (only meaning).

➢ Flowers are seed-bearing structures, containing reproductive organs in a plant body.

➢ Location: At the tip of the stalk/pedicle/peduncle on a branch of a plant.
➢ Characteristics:
o They are present only in flowering plants called angiosperms.
o They belong to phyla - magnoliophyta.
o Flowers are specialized shoot in which the leaves are modified into floral
structures or whorls.
o They are colorful.
o Some flowers produce diaspora without fertilization – Parthenocarpy.
➢ Function:
o They act as vectors for transfer of pollen.
o They are site of gametophytes forms.

➢ Inflorescence: Inflorescence is the mode of arrangement of flowers on a twig.

➢ Placentation:
o Definition: Placentation is the arrangement of ovules to the wall of the
ovary.
o Placenta is a tissue that attaches the ovule to the wall of the ovary.
▪ Location: In the ovary of a flower.
▪ Function: Acts as a medium of arrangement for the ovules.
➢ Post fertilization changes:
o Ovary turns into fruit.
o Ovules turn into seeds.
o The seeds exhibit different forms of arrangement as those of pea, tomato,
mango, lotus, etc.
