Q1\ A compressed air tank having an inner diameter of 18 inches and a wall
thickness of ¼ inch is formed by welding two steel hemispheres (see figure).
If the allowable tensile stress in the steel is 14000psi, what is the maximum
permissible air pressure 𝒑𝒂 in the tank?
Solution/
Allowable pressure based on the tensile stress in the steel. We will use the
equation.
𝒑𝒂 𝒓
𝝈𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒅 =
𝟐𝒕
Then
𝟐𝒕𝝈𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒐𝒘𝒆𝒅
𝒑𝒂 =
𝒓
𝟐 ∗ (𝟎. 𝟐𝟓𝒊𝒏) ∗ (𝟏𝟒𝟎𝟎𝒑𝒔𝒊)
𝒑𝒂 =
𝟗. 𝟎𝒊𝒏
𝒑𝒂 = 𝟕𝟕𝟕. 𝟖𝒑𝒔𝒊
Q2/ A basketball has a 9.5-in. the outer diameter and a 0.125-in. wall
thickness. Determine the normal stress in the wall when the basketball is
inflated to a 9-psi gage pressure.
Solution/
The outer diameter of basketball, 𝒅° = 𝟗. 𝟓𝒊𝒏
Wall thickness of basketball, 𝒕 = 𝟎. 𝟏𝟐𝟓𝒊𝒏
Inside pressure of basketball, 𝒑 = 𝟗𝒌𝒔𝒊
The radius of basketball is given by,
𝟏
𝒓= 𝒅 − 𝒕,
𝟐 °
𝟏
𝒓 = ∗ 𝟗. 𝟓 − 𝟎. 𝟏𝟐𝟓
𝟐
𝒓 = 𝟒. 𝟔𝟐𝟓𝒊𝒏
Maximum normal stress is given by,
𝝈𝟏 = 𝝈𝟐
𝒑𝒓
𝝈𝟏 =
𝟐𝒕
𝟗 ∗ 𝟒. 𝟔𝟐𝟓
𝝈𝟏 = →
𝟐 ∗ 𝟎. 𝟏𝟐𝟓
𝟗 ∗ 𝟒. 𝟔𝟐𝟓
𝝈𝟏 = →
𝟐 ∗ 𝟎. 𝟏𝟐𝟓
𝝈𝟏 = 𝟏𝟔𝟔. 𝟓𝒑𝒔𝒊
Therefore, the maximum normal stress is
𝝈𝟏 = 𝟏𝟔𝟔. 𝟓𝒑𝒔𝒊
