Field Method in Psychology

Catherine Y. Escartin

Mr. Arian Ferrer, RPm

When we talked about Field method in Psychology, it is characterized as a qualitative

data collection method with the goal of observing, engaging and understanding people while they

are in a natural environment. Nature conservationists, for example, study animal behavior in their

natural habitat, and how they respond to those situations. Similarly, researchers can perform

interviews or observe people from a distance to understand how they behave in a social setting

and how they respond to situations around them.

What is the implementation of this subject to us as Psych Major?

Research is one of the most valuable resources as a psychologist. Research presents

insight into human behaviour, if scientific methods are used by the psychologist. The

introduction of this topic will therefore serve a great help in understanding every detail about

performing a research as soon as Psych majors can use it.

When this subject implemented?

This subject was implemented year 2017 according to the memo of Commission on

Higher Education.

Psychologists perform their study using the empirical method. The Scientific Method is a

systematic way to make observations, collect data , create hypotheses, test predictions and

interpret findings.

Researchers make observations to describe the activity and to calculate it. Researchers come up

with a hypothesis that explains certain findings after continuously witnessing those events. A

Theory is an explanation which cohesively organizes separate pieces of knowledge. Researchers

usually establish a hypothesis only after they have gathered a lot of evidence and have made sure

that others can replicate their research findings.

To be considered empirical, psychological study, like study in other fields, needs to follow

certain requirements. Study has got to be: Replicable, Falsifiable, Precise, Parsimonious.

Research Methods used in Psychology

Psychologists use three primary types of study designs, each offering an important

avenue for scientific research.

Descriptive analysis is intended to provide a snapshot of the state of affairs at hand.

Correlational research is research designed to discover relationships among variables and to

enable present-day information to predict future events.

Experimental study is study in which initial equivalence is established between research

participants in more than one group, followed by manipulation of a given experience for these

groups, and measurement of the manipulation effect.

Different types of Research

Psychology uses many different testing approaches. These fall into two areas: qualitative

and quantitative, which relies on the use of mathematical or statistical data. There are many

forms of research under these two divisions including correlational, descriptive, and

experimental. What type of study is used depends on the research objectives.

A case-study is a form of qualitative analysis. It includes watching one person or a group

of individuals over a long period of time. The researcher is either interviewing the subject or
analyzing actions and documenting the details. In general, this form of psychological study is

used to demonstrate how the ideas or theories of psychology are being applied in practical

practice. The method of case study is commonly used in vocational training.

Experimental, though this is implemented as a broad form of research that can be a

component of several approaches, the term here is used to describe a particular technique. In

science, experiments are the most commonly used method of study and its application includes

concepts. One is control group presence. This is an unmanipulated entity, or group of

individuals.

Observational study, this kind of qualitative research can be either naturalistic or

controllable. It's systematic, and documenting carefully. Observational study is aimed at defining

and explaining a variable, or even a group of variables. You may use this form of research as a

guide to other forms that concentrate on a single topic.

The survey is an investigative "shotgun" strategy. It is based on self-reported results, and

may therefore be highly subjective. That is why surveys usually include a lot of topics. It is a

quantitative approach using a random sampling of subjects and is perhaps the only tool where

randomness is used in psychological study. It's not an experimental approach but the samples are

"picked carefully."

Content Analysis, this analysis approach includes looking at media like print, television,

radio and others to repeat certain words or phrases, or even concepts. It is a quantitative method

of researching topics like stereotyping or certain facets of culture such as sexuality using

statistical data about the terms or concepts. This form of research in advertising is extremely

useful but can also be used to predict behavior in specific populations.
