JOESEPH GOEBBELS IN GETS AWAY 

WITH MANIPULATING ALLIED 
MEDIA TO DISRUPT COMMAND

In 1945 Nazi Germany, there was a city 
by the name of Dresden. It was a city 
that many civilians believed held a 
certain status of being a safe haven for 
everyone from some jews to even 
refugees fleeing from other cities, all 
due to it being a very cultured city full of 
art that harming would incur wrath 
from any/all superiors on all sides. This, 
unfortunately, was not true as during 
the war the Allies could simply never 
reach that far into Germany. By 1945 
however, the Nazi War Machine was doing nothing but constantly retreating and exhausting its 
little supplies and the Luftwaffe was barely holding onto its existence due to how thin it was 
stretched between both fronts of the war. With this condition of the Luftwaffe being stretched 
as thin as they were, for February 13-15 Dresden was finally authorized to be bombed due to its 
military factories and how many troops were being deployed from the area.  
 
Germany at the time didn’t consider Dresden under threat since it had never been 
touched before and didn’t receive nearly as many air-raid shelters as other cities, it didn’t even 
have many anti-air garrisons as other cities since the equipment was needed elsewhere. What 
resulted was an atrocity committed by the Allies but not what it seemed. The bombers arrived 
over Dresden during the night with a pitch-black sky above them and had managed to slip by 
using the British technique of dropping small aluminum shards to fool Nazi radar equipment 
into displaying thousands of planes instead of the real number. The Germans fooled, never 
deployed even a scatter of what remained of the Luftwaffe and the Allies pulled off something 
that was very rare, they had a full squad of bombers drop their full payload of firebombs almost 
blindly over the city, this almost never happens due to anti-air defences or enemy interference 
but in this case they only lost 7 Aircraft (1 Figher and 6 Bombers) Out of ~​2089 Allied Aircraft of 
both British and American planes​. The cultured and artistic city full of museums and a long 
many years of precious German history was severely damaged over the course of that time as 
many buildings were torched and houses burned down.

 After dropping their full payload, the planes headed back unaware of what was to come, 
they went to rest without thought of what they had done since they were plenty a distance in the 
sky at the time. Joseph Goebbels, who himself is a devil and happens to be the head of 
propaganda realizes that if he doesn’t find some way to spin this or make it seem not as bad as it 
was could lose his job and/or life. He looks at the police report and takes the casualties, 
statistics, and photos from the police and hands them over to the media companies of neutral 
companies like Switzerland as well as making the Reich newspaper write about the atrocities of 
the Allies abusing a defenceless city and massacring civilians.  
 
An estimated 250,000 dead bodies are expected to be found, in other words you could 
describe this as a PR nightmare. A slaughter of this scale was enormous and as soon as it spread 
from the neutral to the Allied press it created a scandal, that would temporarily stain U.K Prime 
Minister Churchill and U.S President Franklin Roosevelt for authorizing something of this 
scale. The infighting began with the U.S after getting pushed into the spotlight, they instantly 
blamed the U.K and their R.A.F. During the war to this point, the U.K had allowed firebombing 
almost blindly during the night since bombing during the day was met with attritious results, 
after the Dresden scandal the U.K instantly swapped their policy for bombing to drastically 
reduce civilian casualties and Churchill shifted all the blame to Bomber Command leader 
Arthur Harris.  
 
Unknown to them the media had been manipulated by Joseph Goebbels into harassing 
their leaders, the casualties were not near 250,000 at all, but Joseph had privatized them when he 
snatched them from the police. When leaking them to the neutral presses, he looked for 
anything involving civilian injuries and losses and simply added a 0. The result would be the 
media storm and the U.K not giving anyone in Bomber Command any recognition or medals 
after the war, not even during the VE speech are they mentioned or congratulated until roughly 
~70 years later when the doctoring of the statistics was exposed, by this point however it was too 
late. As the war had been over for a long long time.
