From The Commander

I want to remind every one of our February annual "Auction Night". This has, historically, been
one of the most fun meetings that we have ever had. Besides being a lot of fun, it accounts for
about half of the money our little treasury gets each year. We need a big turnout of members,
friends, and families there with money in hand and ready to "do battle" in the bidding process. We
ask that you bring items to donate for the auction, please search through your houses, garages,
basements, and attics for those items that you no longer use or need and are marketable to our
members. Such items as books on the War Between the States, relics, militaria, re-enactors
equipment, fishing equipment, hunting gear, camping gear, edged weapons, pictures, etc. I have
never seen anyone turn down a homemade cake or pie.

With help from 1st lt. Commander Bill Brown, Compatriot Roy Brooks and Adjutant/Treasurer
Mike Thomas, We have some good speakers lined up for the upcoming months. If you have a
program you would like to present or know of a good program you have heard about please let me
know. We would like for as many of our own folks to present programs as possible. This allows
you to share a corner of history that may be of interest to you and the group as well.

Last month quite a few members were under the weather, I hope everyone had a swift recovery
and doing better now. Thank you to the great members that stepped up and fulfilled the duties of
the officers that were missing, The great job you did was much appreciated .

This is just a reminder that the 2011 Virginia convention will take place the weekend of April 1-3.
2011 in Front Royal, VA. Details, including registration information, are on the Division website .
The Virginia Division SCV Convention in hosted by the Col. John S. Mosby Camp #2137. The
convention location will be at the Holiday Inn & Suites at Blue Ridge Shadows Resort, 111
Hospitality Drive, Front Royal, VA 22630; phone # 540-631-3050.

The history of Virginia is the history of America. Today that history and our heritage are under attack. The Scv is circulating a petition to
protect and preserve this proud Virginia History and Heritage. The petition Demands that Governor Bob McDonnell stop his attack on our
Virginia institutions. It is a call for Governor McDonnell to remember that he represents Virginia and that he should desist with whatever
personal agenda he is pursuing.
Specifications:
1. The Confederate Memorial Chapel, Richmond, Virginia:
This Chapel is the last functioning building of the R.E. Lee Camp for Confederate Veterans. Former Union soldiers including Ulysses S. Grant
contributed financially to both the soldiers’ home and the chapel. Since 1887, a pair of Confederate Flags have been flown at the chapel. Governor
Bob McDonnell, supported by former Governor/Senator George Allen, has removed these flags as well as allowing modern encroachment to render
the chapel almost inaccessible.

2. Lee-Jackson Day:
Lee-Jackson Day has been a state holiday since 1904. Two finer examples of what it means to be a Virginian and an American cannot be found than
these two men. All recent Governors of both parties have recognized their service to Virginia by issuing a proclamation. This proclamation has
always been issued well before the State designated holiday. This same proclamation is read at the joint United Daughters of the Confederacy/Sons
of Confederate Veterans ceremonies honoring Lee and Jackson. This year there was no indication that Governor Bob McDonnell would issue this
proclamation. No certificate was issued and the proclamation could only be found on the internet several days after the official holiday.

3. Confederate History and Heritage Month:

In 2010 Governor McDonnell did issue a proclamation honoring the men who fought and died in defense of Virginia, and declared April as
Confederate History and Heritage Month. He then cowardly gave into political pressure and political correctness. He did so by adding words to the
proclamation that had nothing to do with these men or the cause for which they fought. Now Governor McDonnell proposes a “Civil War History
Month.” The intent is a politically correct recognition of all those who fought both for and against Virginia. This is as insulting and ridiculous as it
would be to recognize and honor the Tories who fought against Virginia in our first War of Independence.

There will be petitions at the Feb. meeting, we ask that everyone

support this effort. Even if you sent a letter or signed a petition
in the past, we ask you to take a minute to renew your
support of this cause. The petition will help preserve history
and is an essential part of our ability to fulfill our mission .
A downloadable copy of the petition can be found on our website at

In The News

The revolver belonged to George Washington Rains, who made weapons for the Confederacy.
RICHMOND —
A gun used in the Civil War, then stolen from the Museum of the Confederacy in Richmond has been
recovered more than three decades after the theft. The museum considered the .36 caliber Spiller and Burr
revolver used by General George Washington Rains one of its most prized possessions. “This is one of the very
first and one of the only Confederate manufactured handguns,” said Museum of the Confederacy Collections
Manager Catherine Wright. Wright says only 1,450 of the guns were made. That is one reason why the
museum called the FBI when the gun, with an estimated value of $50,000, disappeared from the collection in
1975. Wright says the gun was stolen when the museum collection was moved out of the White House of the
Confederacy and into a new museum building. “It may have been a casualty of some sort of opportunistic thief
who saw a loose case or a door which may have been standing ajar. The security measures were lax in those
days,” said Wright

In December 2010, Wright says a Knoxville, Tennessee woman found the revolver in her late father's
belongings. When she tried to sell the weapon to an Ohio antique dealer she learned of the revolver's true
identity. The antique dealer looked up the weapon in a Confederate firearms book, traced it back to the
Museum of the Confederacy and contacted the museum. The woman who found the gun will not face charges.
It remains a mystery as to how her father got his hands on the gun. We are told he never lived in Richmond, but
was a collector of Civil War items. The revolver will go on display at the museum in February.

The Confederacy Collections Manager Catherine Wright. will be speaking on flags at the March meeting,
hopefully she will have more inside information on this event.
