ORAL COMMUNICATION
MODULE 6
A. Introduction
Communication models are systematic representations of the process which helps in
understanding how communication works can be done.

B. (Competency 2) Topic: Source-Message-Channel-Receiver (SMCR) Model of Communication

 Objectives

At the end of this lesson, the students will be able to:

1. Learn about the different models proposed to explain the communication process; and
2. Break down a sample interaction using a communication model.

 Definition of Terms

1. One-way interaction – refers to a linear communication process that focuses on the speaker. It is
most applicable for public speaking.
2. Persuasion – pertains to the process of convincing or persuading.
3. Encoding – process of sending the message into words.
4. Decoding – process of analyzing, understanding, or perceiving the message.
5. Feedback – pertains to the reaction or response of the listener.

 Context

 Various models have been proposed to understand the process of communication. One of the famous
communication models is Berlo’s Source-Message-Channel-Receiver Model.

Source-Message-Channel-Receiver (SMCR) Model

- This model is proposed by David Berlo (1960). It suggests five elements in the communication
process namely, the sender or the source of the message; the message, which is the idea sent by
the sender; the channel, which is the medium through which idea is sent; the receiver, who gets
the message; and the feedback, or the response of the receiver.
- The figure shows how the elements interact with each other. If one of these is not properly
functioning, it can affect the whole process and can eventually lead to a failure of communication.

communication, explore their options and to evaluate their own situations. It is also used to
