Research question: To what extent is the efficiency of water-cooling a cup of coffee increased compared

to air-cooling the cup at a room temperature?

Equipment needed:

 A tea cup made out of ceramic


 A rubber tube of a diameter of 1 – 1.5 cm with a length of 40-50 cm
 An electric table fan

 A thermometer
 Isothermal foam
 A boiling water source
 A measuring cup of 100-150 ml
 A refrigerator bag

 A computer with Logger Pro installed on it

Measurement process: I want to place a thermometer inside and calculate the time by using a
stopwatch to see how quick the water temperature drops from boiling temperature to the room
temperature which I will also calculate by using a thermometer

And I also want to calculate how much time it would need for the water to cool down at the same room
temperature using a table fan and compare these 2 results.

Nota bene: It will be imperative to me to make sure that the water comes from a source that has stable
temperature. I will measure the temperatures of the tap water at it`s lowest setting in spring(April) –
because that is when the climate temperature is at its most consistent rate throughout the year,

Independent variable: the method of cooling down the water. This is the independent variable because
the rate of cooling changes accordingly to the method I am cooling the water

Dependent variable: the rate of cooling the water determined by overall time the cooling process takes
to cool down to 21o

Expected outcome: I think that water cooling is a more efficient way too cool down a cup of coffee and I
expect to see an improvement of 50-60% in the efficiency.
