MODULE ACTIVITY

a) What are the positive and negative effects of technology to society?

Positive Effects
a. Easier Communication- With a click on the phone and using the internet, we can
see people or contact them on the other country. Because of technology it saves
time and money not just like on the past days wherein, people use postal services
and sending letters.

b. Better goods and services. It’s an understood psychological truth that people
behave better when they know they’re being watched. In an age where every
customer has a mobile phone camera, businesses are under this scrutiny 24/7, and
they’re forced to stay on their toes to keep their doors open and their lights
running.

c. Easier Transportation- We can travel faster and can helps us cross large distances,
managing responsibilities across large territories previously impossible to
oversee.

d. Improved Media- Satellite systems revolutionized the way people share

information. For the first time, citizens could see and hear global events for
themselves.

Negative Effects
a. Energy Use- Because of modern technology, it needs/ require extensive energy
from natural resources for continuation.

b. Privacy Issues- Hackers can easily penetrate and access your information quickly.
Not to mention, stalking can turn into an issue too, especially with an online
social presence.

c. Technology reduces human effort- Machines can do the heavy lifting for us,
means humanity is slowly making itself obsolete. With the technology it can
reduce huge amount of work people can do, which makes us to become obese
sometimes.

d. It becomes much easier to copy or plagiarize information- Copyright laws are

becoming very challenging to enforce because music and movie files are so easy
to transfer on peer-to-peer sites.

Madarang, Karl Erbin Viernes.

e. Waste of time. There are so many interesting things on the Internet, but if we would
like to review and comment on everything, one life wouldn’t be enough. We only have
one life and the day lasts only twenty-four hours, so we must use time wisely.

b) What are the impacts of technological advancement on Education today?

Education is the backbone of every economy. People need well and

organized educational infrastructures so that they can learn how to interpret
information. Many schools have started integrating educational technologies in
their schools with a great aim of improving the way students learn. Technology has
allowed for, at times, both an easier and yet a more complicated way of dealing
with things in the classroom. Back in the old day’s teachers write their lessons or
topics in the blackboard then the students will copy the ideas or information that
were written on the blackboard but nowadays teachers uses powerpoint in order to
present they’re ideas regarding about the lessons. Because of the invention of
computers, it is easier for the teacher to clearly present their ideas. Computer
classes have to be organized and taught in order to keep the children up to date on
the latest technology. Along with the computer era comes the Age of the Internet, a
new source of information and communication. The sad reality of the improvement
of technology, instead of going to the library to gather some information, students
just browse the internet which lessens the capability of student to think or hone
their skills.
Opportunities for communication and collaboration have also been expanded
by technology. Traditionally, classrooms have been relatively isolated, and
collaboration has been limited to other students in the same classroom or building.
Today, technology enables forms of communication and collaboration undreamt of
in the past. Students in a classroom in the rural U.S., for example, can learn about
the Arctic by following the expedition of a team of scientists in the region, read
scientists’ blog posting, view photos, e-mail questions to the scientists, and even
talk live with the scientists via a videoconference. Students can share what they are
learning with students in other classrooms in other states who are tracking the same
expedition. Students can collaborate on group projects using technology-based
tools such as wikis and Google docs. The walls of the classrooms are no longer a
barrier as technology enables new ways of learning, communicating, and working
collaboratively.
Another real-life impact of technology in the education in the MMSU especially us
computer science students is the development of the MVLE, because of it, teachers

can now post assignments or quiz which will be done by students if ever the
teacher can’t come to the class. It has also a forum wherein students can put
suggestions or voice their opinion regarding about the subject.
Technology-based projects can also inspire students to think and collaborate as
opposed to memorizing, whether they’re using the web for research or to
correspond with other students or experts who are not physically present. These
projects likewise help them learn technology skills they’ll need to succeed in the
modern workforce. Though technology itself can be expensive, it can also help
schools save money.
c) Utilizing the technological advancements, what are the new challenges in
the promotion and protection of human rights?

Lately, all we’ve been hearing about is how anti-social social media is and how
our personal data is being used to manipulate us online. Developments in
artificial intelligence, robotics, and genetic engineering will inevitably force us
to consider emerging ethical questions. However, those creating these
technologies also have a great responsibility to ensure that they fit in with
current human rights standards, and could make up part of the long-term
solution to current human rights concerns. So how can the advancement of
technology protect the privilege of human rights?

a. Encryption and Digital Security Tools Can Help to Curb Online Harassment
Against Women - This type of software has also been used to allow women to
securely and anonymously report instances of sexual assault and violence.
Because nowadays, violation to human rights are mostly subjected to women
and girls who have been washed their dignity, privacy and safety online.
b. Big data and human rights- Cloud computing and big data analysis can use
this data to analyze key trends and provide early warnings for critical issues
before they occur, aiding the prevention and rapid response to humanitarian
disasters.
c. Protecting human rights in the supply chain- Blockchain is an authentication
mechanism that can enable transparency in supply chains from sourcing through
to the customer purchase.

d) Write an essay reflecting your opinion regarding the application of

technology in education and social life.

Technology, the people of Tomorrow

We are now living in a modern technology dependent generation

where almost everything is just click away. The advancement of technology
fascinates us. Just think about Smart TV’S, high end computers,
smartphones and most important thing is the application of technology in
education and social life. For over twenty-five years now institutions of
learning continue to invest in the constantly changing technology,
nevertheless one question has remained unanswered all through, “is there
any evidence that the use of technology in the learning of students leads to
higher levels of the learning?”

First, we will voice out my opinion regarding about the impact of

technology in education. As a computer science student, the application of
technology had a big impact in our education. Just think about using the
MVLE made by our teacher in Computer Science. It’s a virtual learning
environment, wherein you can add a course you like and just read about the
topics that were posted there. With these virtual environments, students can
download these files and can have an advance reading on their lessons. If
ever you want to go something, students will just browse their phone and
read the file instead of carrying a whole bunch of books that’s very heavy.
Technology is very important in education to create a new and innovative
practical syllabus, improve the security of students, student’s data
management and analysis and performance reporting and teachers training
programs. Bu there is a slight disadvantage of technology, It’s cliché as hell,
but I’m going to say it anyway, technology means to that students of today
has access to information that students of the past did not have. We’ve all
heard it a thousand times, and why don’t we utilize it? Why don’t we start to
connecting with people all around the world to inspire students and to
educate them? The fact is that students thirty years ago students can only
gain information by asking local people or maybe reading books. Today we
have the likes of Wikipedia and the other billion of web pages on the
internet to gather information and to educate us. But, it doesn’t matter what
subject you teach, Math, English, Computer Science does not matter, there
Group 6: Levi Adina, Frederick Advincula, Stephen John Andres, Mark Daniel Bisac, Thorsten Michael
Madarang, Karl Erbin Viernes.

are people out there whose passion is your subject and they want to make
you students feel enriched and engaged in their subject. Just like if you don’t
understand the lessons that were discussed in your classrooms, you can use
Youtube to watch the lessons that you don’t understand. You can talk to true
professionals who really can give us students some extra insights and make
us students really empowered and interested in the lessons and very engaged
because they’re talking to an industry that is really expert.

Next, is the impact of technology on the social life. First of all,

technology makes connections and brings people together. The Internet is
one of the significant examples of technology. In many ways technology has
enabled us to create and even strengthen relationships by keeping in contact
with friends, family members, and even your work mates. Let’s be honest,
first when we wake up on the morning is to use our phone, next is to eat our
breakfast while looking on our phone. Phones and social media have been an
integrated part of our society, that it taken us from our morning and the rest
of the day. So, technology have evolved and gained a lot of power in this
modern technology booming age. So how does modern technology improve
our social life? It can be found in many ways, first is in the field of medical
research. Biotechnology and medical devices helps us to live healthier and
offers new hope for the sick. Next is in the Environmental Research, it
brings better monitoring, prevention and remediation technology. Third is
Agricultural Research, providing us safer, healthier and tastier good
products. And the last is Information and telecommunication technologies,
enabled instantaneous communicating around the world. With these impacts,
technology greatly affect on how we live in a standard and quality of life.

As a conclusion, Teacher and students, Im sure your aware that

copying in the textbook is flat, it’s boring and if your textbook is like written
hundred years ago, the information in there is outdated. Use of technology in
education increased the level of accuracy in educational materials to a higher
standard. Uses of new technologies are expanding. New computer programs
and mobile apps are all playing their role to solve daily life problems. Online
classes, online degree programs, and distance education, etc. are the
innovation in education because of the use of information technologies.
Students and teachers are getting various applications for distance education,
online courses, and degree programs. There are numerous advantages of

online classes and degree programs. All is because of the integration of

technology in the learning and communication process.
Technology is a powerful tool that can support and transform
education in many ways, from making it easier for teachers to create
instructional materials to enabling new ways for people to learn and work
together. With the worldwide reach of the Internet and the ubiquity of smart
devices that can connect to it, a new age of anytime anywhere education is
dawning. It will be up to instructional designers and educational
technologies to make the most of the opportunities provided by technology
to change education so that effective and efficient education is available to
everyone everywhere.
e) Explain different international and local government policies regarding the
protection of human being in the face of new technologies.

Law Enforcement and International Security Context

1) First, there are legitimate human rights reasons why governments, law
enforcement agencies, and companies may restrict the free flow of
information (such as removing images of child exploitation), or allow access
to personal information (such as tackling fraud, terrorism, or violent crime).
It is the duty of government to protect human rights; in that sense the
majority
of law enforcement activities are undertaken to protect human rights rather
than violate them. It is for this reason that enabling legitimate law
enforcement agencies access to data or restricting certain types of
information constitute important parts of a reasonable commitment to
respecting human rights by ICT companies.

2) Second, while these activities are frequently undertaken with positive

public policy goals in mind, there is always the risk that governments and
law
enforcement agencies will make demands of the private sector to undertake
privacy or freedom of expression-invasive activities that infringe on human
rights. Incidents of this type will be small in number when compared to the
overall volume of law enforcement; however, incidents of this type will be
especially significant in terms of their impact on human rights.
Group 6: Levi Adina, Frederick Advincula, Stephen John Andres, Mark Daniel Bisac, Thorsten Michael
Madarang, Karl Erbin Viernes.

It is for this reason that understanding why, how, and when to deny
government access to data or demands to restrict content—and mitigate the
risk of being asked in the first place—is a reasonable commitment by ICT
companies to respect human rights.

National and Local Context

The international policies are for rules every nation with its norms and laws
agreed to be followed by each nation. The local policies although it is
covered by international policies it also has its own policies that the
president together with his people agreed on a local policies differs from the
international policy in terms of its governance whether republic/democratic,
oligarchy, aristocracy and monarchy democracy.

1) Some governments are more transparent than others in how their national
security and law enforcement priorities are pursued and the requirements
that they place on the private sector to assist.

2) Some governments undertake national security and law enforcement

activities that are consistent with their local domestic law, while other
governments (to varying degrees) pursue national security and law
enforcement activities that are in conflict with their own domestic law.

3) Some governments have in place legal frameworks that are consistent

with
internationally recognized laws and standards on human rights, while other
governments (again, to varying degrees) have in place legal frameworks or
pursue national security and law enforcement activities that are inconsistent
with these international standard
