Module (SLM) on Audio Information and Media!

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both
from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming
their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of
the module:

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this module.
You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to manage
their own learning. Furthermore, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.

ii
For the learner:

Welcome to the Media and Information Literacy - Grade 11/12 Self-Learning Module
(SLM) on Audio Information and Media!

The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and
accomplish. Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a learner
is capable and empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies and
skills at your own pace and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to
process the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

iv
What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you master
the Audio Information and Media . The scope of this module permits it to be used in
many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard
sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to
correspond with the textbook you are now using.

The module is divided into two learning outcomes, namely:

LO 1 – Describe the different dimensions of audio information and media.

(MIL-11/12AIM-IVd-11)
LO 2- Produce and evaluate a creative audio-based presentation using
design principles and elements. (MIL11/12-AIM-IVd-14)

After going through this module, you are expected to:

a) Identify the different types of audio content;
b) Describe the purposes of audio media and information; and
c) Critique the effectiveness of particular audio information.

1
Definition of Terms

Lesson
Audio Information and
15 Media
Media and other information providers play a central role in information and
communication processes. Nowadays, media become the common outlet of self-
expression and creativity. Its huge influence spreads speedily across the globe. The
connection between technological advances and people’s connectivity created a huge
impact on the lives of today’s generation. This module covers all the above-
mentioned concepts.

What’s In

Visual media and information is one of the effective means in disseminating

important messages. With the right combination of design elements, instructional
messages will effectively deliver.

Combining text and visual is one of the best way to deliver information to wide variety
of audience for it promotes critical and creative thinking. However, information can
be also be sent and received through the use of one’s ears.

To learn more of the lesson, let us take a look on the next activity.

Notes to the Teacher

Download samples of audio formats available on the internet and

use it as an example in presenting the lesson.

4
What’s New

Activity : Classify the following concepts as to its files, formats and manner of
storing information. Use the matrix below.

Music, podcast, MP3, CD, Memory card, Audio podcast, MP4, WMA (Windows Media
Audio), Internet/Cloud, USB drive

Audio Files Audio formats Audio storage

Guide Questions:

1. How did you group the the concepts presented?

5
What is It

AUDIO MEDIA

Information dissemination is not only delivered through texts and visuals. It can also
be heard. However, hearing alone is not enough to fully consume the information,
these information from audio media require listening. Listening refers to something
that is consciously chosen to do and requires concentration. On the other hand,
hearing is an act or perceiving sound by the ear.

With the never ending innovation of media, information may come into different
audio file type such as:

Radio Broadcast live or recorded audio sent through radio waves to reach a
wide audience.
vocal and/or instrumental sounds combined in such a
Music way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and
expression of emotion.
Sound Recording recording of an interview, or any sound from the
environment.
Sound clips/effects any sound other than music or speech, artificially
reproduced to create an effect.
a digital audio or video file recording, usually part of
Audio Podcast themed series, that can be downloaded from a website to
a media player or computer.

Ways of storing audio media may be done through the use of tape, CD, USB drive,
memory card, and computer hard drive.
Tape magnetic tape on which sound can be recorded.
a plastic-fabricated, circular medium for recording,
CD storing, and playing back audio, video, and computer
data.
an external flash drive, small enough to carry on a key
USB drive ring, that can be used with any computer that has a USB
port.
(aka flash memory card or storage card) is a small storage
Memory Card medium used to store data such as text, pictures, audio,
and video, for use on small, portable, or remote computing
devices.
Computer hard drive secondary storage devices for storing audio files.
websites or file repositories for retrieving audio files, and
Internet/Cloud more precisely the files are stored in some data center full
of servers that is connected to the Internet.

6
In addition, audio media are classified into different file formats such as

MP3 a common format for consumer audio, as well as a

(MPEG Audio Layer 3) standard of digital audio compression for the transfer
and playback of music on most digital audio players.
M4A/AAC an audio coding standard for lossy digital audio
(MPEG-4 compression. Designed to be the successor of the MP3
Audio/Advanced Audio format, AAC generally achieves better sound quality
Coding) than MP3 at similar bit rates.
is a Microsoft audio file format standard for storing an
WAV audio bitstream on PCs. It has become a standard file
format for game sounds, among others.
WMA is an audio data compression technology developed by
(Windows Media Audio) Microsoft and used with Windows Media Player

7
Sound Characteristics and Purposes

Purposes of using sound or audio media:

a. Give instruction or information
b. Provide feedback
c. To personalize or customise

Elements of Sound Design - the objects or things we have to work with

Dialogue speech, conversation, voice-over.

Sound Effects any sound other than music or dialogue.
vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in
Music such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony,
and expression of emotion.
Silence absence of audio or sound.

Principles of Sound Design – the techniques for combining the different elements
or objects.

Mixing the combination, balance and control of multiple

sound elements.
Pace Time control. Editing. Order of events: linear, non-
linear, or multi-linear.
Stereo Imaging Using left and right channel for depth.
Transitions How you get from one segment or element to another
Types of transitions:
Segue one element stops, the next begins ("cut" in film).
Cross-fade one element fades out, the next fades in, and they
overlap on the way.
V-Fade First element fades to inaudible before the second
element begins.
Fade to Black V-Fade with some silence between elements.
As first element fades out, the second element begins
Waterfall at full volume. Better for voice transitions, than for
effects.
