3. Principles of Communication
Principles are basic truths, standards, morals, values, rules, concepts, teachings, ideas, theories
or guidelines that serve as foundation for a process, system of belief, or behavior or reasoning
a. Know and understand your audience= consider the receiver of the message to determine the
language style, tone and quality of your message. Consider the age, sex, education level,
occupation, religion, needs, interests etc.
b. Be prepared= select topic appropriate to the audience. Have enough info and how to best present it
c. Know your purpose= purpose is the end of human interactions. Just like why do you need to send a
text, Viber or twitter message, or why write a complaint letter, technical or research reports.
d. Be objective=writing with balanced views, truth and unbiased info thru the use of facts or statistical
data that can be verified by scientific evidence.
e. Be complete=answers the basic 5Ws and H. should contain all the facts the receiver needs.
f. Be concise= keeping it short, simple and direct to the point to emphasize important points and to
save time
g. Be clear=Clarity means saying or writing exactly what you mean. Use simple, familiar, correctly
spelled words and grammatically correct sentences
h. Be coherent=coherence refers to the logical connection of words, sentences and paragraphs in your
message
i. Be careful in judgment=avoid prejudging incoming messages. Judge the content, not the form of the
message
j. Be creative=use clear and simple visual aids creatively and appropriately to illuminate or illustrate
your words to help the audience remember more.
k. Be respectful to authority=authority refers to a book containing a particular statement or opinion.
this is giving credit to others for their works or accomplishments by acknowledging and citing them
as source of your info
l. Observe communication ethics=always be guided by values and morals when you engage in any kind
or context of human interaction
4. Communication Ethics
Ethics is the study of values and morals of what is right or wrong (Sage, 2009). Meaning, you do what
is correct and avoid hat is wrong
Communication ethics is the system of moral principles that govern all forms of human interactions,
including the resulting behavior, in everyday life.
The international Association of Business Communicators (IABC) adopts a code of ethics. This
serves as guide in making consistent, responsible, ethical and legal choices in all of their members’
communications. The code includes the following:
I am honest- my actions bring respect for and trust in the communication profession.
I communicate accurate information and promptly correct any errors.
I obey laws and public policies; if I violate any law or public policy, I act promptly to correct the
situation.
I protect confidential information while acting within the law.
I support the ideals of free speech, freedom of assembly, and access to an open marketplace of
ideas.
I am sensitive to others’ cultural values and beliefs.
I give credit to others for their work and cite my sources.
I do not use confidential information for personal benefit.
I do not represent conflicting or competing interests without full disclosure and the written
consent of those involved.
I do not accept undisclosed gifts or payments for professional services from anyone other tan a
client or employer.
I do not guarantee results that are beyond my power to deliver.
Activity 1: Give a CONCRETE EXAMPLE of communication or conversation using the basic elements of communication.
Activity 2: Choose 3 from the functions of communication and be able to give a concrete example for each to best
explain the function.
Activity 3: Make a reaction or a reflection paper as to the presented Code of Ethics of the IABC. What is your stand
about it? Do you agree or disagree to the facts presented? Will you be a good communicator if you follow the code or
not? Explain it in 3 paragraphs (intro, body, conclusion)
