An international peer-reviewed journal of
cross-cultural philosophy and humanities
that is published semi-annually both in
print and electronically. The journal seeks
to encourage and promote research in the
type of philosophy and theory that sees
dialogue as a fundamental ingredient of
cultural formations, that is to say the ways
cultures become apparent and ultimately
identifiable. What is meant here by
culture is a particular manifestation of
human achievement in the arts, languages,
forms of expression (whether secular
or religious), and customs of all kinds
including political ones.
Dialogue, in this context, means a
mode of relationship that lets cultural
formations unfold by bringing together
human beings and, for example, their
natural environment, their historical past,
traditions, external cultural influences,
contemporary trends, other communities,
or simply other persons in conversation.
Culture and Dialogue provides a forum
for researchers from philosophy as
well as other disciplines, who study
cultural formations dialogically, through
comparative analysis, or within the
tradition of hermeneutics.

the overall aim, and now the Yearbook
is published annually for the Danish

Reflecting the broad interpretation of

Universities, the Yearbook aims to cover as

in relation to philosophical schools, styles
and traditions. The Yearbook can dedicate

In the medieval, late medieval and pre-modern world of Islam,
Muslims, Jews and Christians constituted a unique cultural and

intellectual commonality. They shared a language, Arabic (and
at times Persian), which they spoke in daily life and which they
also used for their theological, philosophical, legal and scientific
writings. Moreover, they often read the same books, so that a
continuous, multi-dimensional exchange of ideas, texts, and forms
of discourse was the norm rather than the exception. While this
has been amply demonstrated for some selected periods and
regions, scholars usually opt for a one-dimensional approach with 41
an (often exclusive) focus on either Muslim, Jewish or Christian
authors and their writings.

Méthexis seeks to promote studies
and research in the history of ancient
philosophy (throughout the course of its

reflecting different schools of thought
and methodological approaches, be they

Oriens is dedicated to extending our
knowledge of intellectual history and
developments in the rationalist disciplines
in Islamic civilization, with a special
emphasis on philosophy, theology, and
science. These disciplines had a profoundly
rich and lasting life in Islamic civilization
and often interacted in complex ways-
-from the period of their introduction
to Islamic civilization in the translation
movement that began in the eighth
century, through the early and classical
periods of development, to the
postclassical age, when they shaped even
such disciplines as legal theory and poetics.
The journal’s range extends from the early
and classical to the early modern periods
(ca. 700-1900 CE) and it engages all regions
and languages of Islamic civilization. In the
tradition of Hellmut Ritter, who founded
Oriens in 1948, the central focus of interest
of the journal is on the medieval and early
modern periods of the Near and Middle
East.
