Explain your idea:

Production of food serving plates and cups from banana tree
waste and to enlarge the technology for utilization of banana tree
waste into the furniture products.

 Problem Addressed
Definition of the problem
 After harvesting the banana fruits, majority of the banana farmers
interment/destroyed the banana tree trunk and other parts of banana tree in the farm
field.

 Banana farmers are concentrating only in selling the banana fruits not any other parts
of banana tree parts for converting into money.

 Similarly, banana farmers are affected due to frequent price drop of the banana fruit.
Several times the farmers have to incur losses due to the price variation.

 Banana farmers are facing huge financial loss due to unpredictable strong gale wind
during April & May.

 Banana trees and fruits are destroyed irrespective of the age, healthy growth and other

factors due to strong gale wind.

The Solution
Banana Tree Waste converted to Tableware products using the following steps
Production Methodology:
 Procurement of banana tree waste(Raw materials)
 Removal of banana trunk
 Separation of banana sheath
 Direct sun drying (four days in direct sun drying or two days in solar dryer)
 Water dipping process (20 minutes)
 Water reduction process (15 minutes)
 Lengthening process Pasting with multiple sheath
 Thermal & hydraulic compression
 Packing
 Banana tree waste are converted into value added products such as, food serving
plates, bowl and cups from the banana sheath (Tree trunk waste)
 Small re-modifications are made in the areca nut plate machine for banana sheath
plate making.
We have developed the products with collaborative project guidelines of
ICAR-National Research Center for Banana, Trichy. 5
