Upgrade Guide (SMT-Based)
Local upgrade of BTS boards in a
live network
Pre-deployment upgrade means that the BTS software is upgraded without interconnecting the BTS
with the BSC.
The M2000 can upgrade software only for the following boards:
− GTMU
− TRX board
This document describes how to use the BSC6900 LMT to upgrade BTS software to
V100R014C00SPC058.
Select the upgrade guide that corresponds to the upgrade scenario.
Versions earlier than First, upgrade the BTS software to BTS3000V100R013 series
BTS3000V100R009 version (BTS3000V100R013C00SPC039 is recommended).
Then upgrade the intermediate version to
BTS3000V100R014C00SPC058. For details about the upgrade
solutions, contact Huawei technical support.
CAUTION
For a multi-mode base station, SRAN5.0 and later versions can be upgraded directly to
the target version whereas versions earlier than SRAN5.0 must first be upgraded to
SRAN6.0 before being upgraded to the target version. Run the DSP BSMODE
command to query the current mode of a base station, to determine whether a base
station works in multi-mode or single-mode.
For the upgrade of SRAN5.0 and later versions, check Appendix 1 Version Mapping
Information to determine whether the source version is an SRAN version. You can obtain
this appendix from the multi-mode base station release notes in the documentation
library delivered with the software version of the multi-mode base station. For details
about SRAN upgrade requirements, see the upgrade guide of the multi-mode base
station. For non-SRAN versions, contact Huawei technical support to determine the
upgrade solution.
TDM IP TDM IP
transmission transmission transmission transmission
mode mode mode mode
In IP transmission mode, services are properly provided during the loading process in these loading
modes. In TDM transmission mode, these loading modes differ as follows:
Normal Mode: If BTS Multiplexing Mode or BCCH TRX RSL Multiplexing Mode is set to
MODE2_1, MODE3_1, MODE4_1, MODE5_1, or MODE6_1, you are advised to load software
during off-peak hours. Otherwise, services may be affected.
Rapid Mode (No Service): Software loading interrupts services on all TRXs.
Rapid Mode (Reserve BCCH trx): Software loading interrupts services only on non-BCCH TRXs.
1.5 Precautions
1.5.1 Upgrade Precautions
Table 1.1 Alarm generated on a dual-mode base station during a mode-by-mode upgrade
Problem In versions earlier than MBTS version BTS3900 V100R004C00SPC130
Description (GBTS: BTS3000V100R013C00SPC019), Input Voltage Alarm Upper
Threshold is set to a small value 57, which leads to a false alarm.
Therefore, in MBTS version BTS3900 V100R004C00SPC130 (GBTS:
BTS3000V100R013C00SPC019), the value of this parameter has been
changed to 58.
This change causes the alarm Inter-System Monitoring Device Parameter
Settings Conflict (Alarm ID: ALM-26271) to be generated when the
following conditions are met:
The EMU board is shared between two modes of the dual-mode base
station.
The version of one mode is upgraded to MBTS version BTS3900
V100R004C00SPC130 (GBTS: BTS3000V100R013C00SPC019) or a
later version during a mode-by-mode upgrade.
After the versions of the two modes are both upgraded to MBTS version
BTS3900 V100R004C00SPC130 (GBTS:
BTS3000V100R013C00SPC019) or a later version, ALM-26271 is
cleared because the values of Input Voltage Alarm Upper Threshold are
consistent between the two modes.
Workaround Preventive measures: Before the upgrade, remove the EMU board from
the mode that will not be upgraded by running one of the following
commands:
RMV BTSBRD: used for GSM
RMV EMU: used for UMTS or LTE
Emergency measures: If the EMU board is not removed from the mode
that will not be upgraded before the upgrade is performed, manually
suppress ALM-26271 after the upgrade.
Table 1.2 A BTS in IP over FE mode may fail to establish a link to the BSC after a BTS upgrade
Problem BTS3000 V100R014C00 series have a high requirement on the check for
Description abnormal IP address configurations. A BTS may fail to establish a link to
the BSC after the BTS is upgraded to V100R014C00 when both of the
following conditions are met:
The BTS works in IP over FE mode and communicates using the port IP
address.
The port IP address is configured for Ethernet port 1 on the GTMU, but
the BTS is physically connected to Ethernet port 0.
Workaround Preventive measures: Reconfigure the port IP address to Ethernet port 0
by performing the following steps:
1. Run the LST BTSDEVIP command to query and record the IP address
configured for Ethernet port 1 on the GTMU.
2. Run the DEA BTS command to deactivate the BTS.
3. Run the RMV BTSDEVIP command to remove the IP address
configured for Ethernet port 1.
If you are prompted that the IP address cannot be removed, follow the prompt to
remove the objects dependent on the BTS device IP address. After step 4 is
complete, restore the configurations of those objects.
4. Run the ADD BTSDEVIP command to configure the port IP address
for Ethernet port 0 on the GTMU.
5. Run the ACT BTS command to activate the BTS.
Emergency measures: None
Table 1.3 A BTS enabled with the Multi-site Cell feature reporting ALM-28010 after it is
upgraded from V100R009 to V100R012 or later when certain conditions are met
Problem In V100R009, the RF module does not check whether the power of all
Description TRXs in a subsite under a multi-site cell exceeds RF module capability.
When the power exceeds RF module capability, the RF module makes its
maximum allowable power take effect without reporting an alarm.
In V100R012 and later, the RF module checks whether the power exceeds
RF module capability. After a BTS in V100R009 under which the power
of all TRXs in a subsite exceeds RF module capability is upgraded to
V100R012 or later, the BTS reports ALM-28010 Carrier Configuration
Error with a cause value "Carrier Configuration Error-Excessive Power."
Workaround Preventive measures:
Before the upgrade, run the LST BTSLOCGRP command to check
whether the power of all TRXs in a subsite exceeds RF module capability.
If yes, run the MOD BTSLOCGRP command with Output Power set to
an appropriate value.
Emergency measures:
After the upgrade, run the MOD BTSLOCGRP command with Output
Power of the subsite reporting the alarm set to an appropriate value.
1.5.2 Notes
2. Before the upgrade, determine whether the BSC6900 needs to be upgraded based on the
information in the "Related Product Versions" section of the 3900 Series GSM BTS
V100R014C00SPC058 Release Notes.
3. Services will be interrupted during the upgrade. Therefore, you are advised to upgrade
the BTS software during off-peak hours.
4. During the BTS upgrade process, do not reset boards or the BTS.
5. The name (case-sensitive) of the upgrade software package must be consistent
throughout the upgrade, and the length of the path where the package is saved must not
exceed 255 characters.
6. This document uses the GTMU, MRRU, UBRI, and EMU as examples to describe how
to upgrade BTS boards. The processes for upgrading the DRRU, DRFU, GRRU, GRFU
and MRFU are the same as the process for upgrading the MRRU. The processes for
upgrading the USCU, UCIU and UTRP are the same as the process for upgrading the
UBRI. The processes for upgrading other boards are the same as the process for
upgrading the EMU. For details about the categories of BTS boards, see section
7.1"What Are the Categories of BTS Boards."
7. All configured BTS boards except monitoring boards must be upgraded during a BTS
upgrade. The decision on whether to upgrade monitoring boards must depend on the
precautions released by Huawei. If necessary, upgrade monitoring boards after upgrading
the non-monitoring boards. For details about how to upgrade monitoring boards, see
section 7.2"How Do I Upgrade Monitoring Boards."
8. Data configuration on the SMT will occupy BTS management rights, which may result
in a BTS upgrade failure on the BSC. Therefore, during the BTS upgrade on the BSC, do
not use the SMT to obtain BTS management rights on the BTSs to be upgraded.
3 Board Base stations except DBS3900 are used and any three or
configuration more types of the following boards are configured: UBRI,
MRFU/GRFU V1, MRFU/GRFU V2, and DRFU.
The DBS3900 is used and any three or more types of the
following boards are configured: UBRI, MRRU/GRRU V1
900 MHz, MRRU/GRRU V1 1800 MHz, MRRU/GRRU
V2, and DRRU.
In practice, the preceding problem rarely occurs. When this problem occurs, ignore the
message indicating the failure in loading and activating TRX boards. The BTS will
automatically load and activate the failed board after the GTMU is activated successfully.
Services of this board may be interrupted for about 32 minutes. (The specific service
interruption duration depends on the transmission quality.) To check which sites have the
preceding risk, contact Huawei engineers.
CAUTION
The BSC controlling a multi-mode base station and all modes of the multi-mode base
station must be managed by the same M2000, and the modes must be bound to each other
on the M2000.
For a multi-mode base station, ensure that the versions of different modes are compatible
with each other after the upgrade. If a multi-mode and co-module base station uses the
mode-by-mode upgrade mode, the upgrade interval between a local upgrade and a remote
upgrade must be within one day.
