CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Modern life has become easier to the people because of the contribution of the
internet technology to communication and information sharing. The internet has made
our life become easier and more convenient. We can use internet to communicate to
the people that are far from us to get information and make new friends.

The spread of technological tools across the world has immensely influenced the
large amount of people especially students.

According to Bashir, MahMood and Shafique (2008), they found that for the most
university students the internet is a functional tool, one that has greatly changed the
way they interact with others and with information selection, presentation, organization
and provision. As the internet becomes increasingly popular, more information and
services are available on the internet; the demand for use of the internet from the
general public also increases dramatically (Liu.1996)

Internet use is spreading rapidly into our daily life, and directly affecting people’s
ideas and behavior. Internet has an impact in many areas, including the higher
education system. The internet is inseparable part of today’s educational system. The
academic community increasingly depends on the internet for educational purposes.
Majority of academic and research institutions provide internet service to students,
researchers, and teachers. (Bashirs, Mahmood and Shafique, 2008)

Increasingly, university students are using the Internet as an information resource


while in search of information for academic assignments. The emergence of the internet
has had profound impact on society in general and on library and information services in
particular. The use of the internet has been growing vividly in recent years. (Liu, 1996)

The use of internet in the educational environment has enabled easy access to many
resources and information sharing has, therefore significantly increased. Moreover the
prevalence of this sharing has brought additional benefits in that, these resources can
be used in any location and time (Sahin,BaHa, and Erran, 2010) Usun (2008) states
that the internet is appealing to the higher education for a number of reasons, it reduces
the time lag between the production and utilization and exchange of opinion, it extends
the sharing of information and it promotes multidisciplinary research.

In having on access in internet connection, we must know what are the advantages
and disadvantages of it especially to the HUMSS students. Although now a days,
internet connection is part of our daily life.

This aims to inform people especially HUMSS students about the advantage and
disadvantage of having an access in internet connection ad to know how does internet
connection help the HUMSS students to widen their knowledge and to improve their
achievements.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The research study determined the advantages and disadvantages of having an


access in internet connection to all HUMSS students. Especially, it seek answers to the
following questions.

1. What are the advantages of having an access in internet connection to all


HUMSS students, in terms of;
1.1 Studies
1.2 Social Media
1.3 To communicate
1.4 New learning
2. What are the disadvantages of having an access in internet connection to all
HUMSS students, in terms of;
1.1 Distraction
1.2 Laziness
1.3 Dependence
3. What are the reasons in using the internet?
1.1 Entertainment
1.2 Information
1.3 Communication
4. Why students rely more on the internet for academic purpose
5. What are the importances of having an access in internet connection to all
HUMSS students?

HYPOTHESIS
The null hypothesis is tested in the study.

(1) There is no significant difference in the academic performance of the students with
internet access and those without internet access.
(2) There is no association between education of the students and usage of internet.

IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY


This study will be a great help to the Researcher, Future Researcher
and especially to HUMSS Students.

Researchers. This study will help the researchers to broaden their knowlegde about the
advantages and disadvantages of having an access in internet connection to all
HUMSS Students.

Future Researchers. This study will serve as a useful reference especially those who
will conduct related study and also this study will help them to provide additional
information.

Students. This study will help them to know the advantages and disadvantages of
having an access in internet connection to all HUMSS Students.
SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study focuses in the advantages and disadvantages of having an


access in internet connection to all HUMSS Students. We will limit this study by given
information about internet connection, until we came up in the advantages and
disadvantages of having an access in internet connection and at last we will give our
recommendation to help the HUMSS Students. As the instrument of this study, Survey
Questionnaire will be used by the researcher.
CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK

This study will undergo in systematic process using the following input
which stated on the table (Figure 1). The researcher would apply the following process
of course to have a reliable and useful result for the study, to obtain good outcome and
meet the expectations of the researchers.
