INTRODUCTION
Modern life has become easier to the people because of the contribution of the
internet technology to communication and information sharing. The internet has made
our life become easier and more convenient. We can use internet to communicate to
the people that are far from us to get information and make new friends.
The spread of technological tools across the world has immensely influenced the
large amount of people especially students.
According to Bashir, MahMood and Shafique (2008), they found that for the most
university students the internet is a functional tool, one that has greatly changed the
way they interact with others and with information selection, presentation, organization
and provision. As the internet becomes increasingly popular, more information and
services are available on the internet; the demand for use of the internet from the
general public also increases dramatically (Liu.1996)
Internet use is spreading rapidly into our daily life, and directly affecting people’s
ideas and behavior. Internet has an impact in many areas, including the higher
education system. The internet is inseparable part of today’s educational system. The
academic community increasingly depends on the internet for educational purposes.
Majority of academic and research institutions provide internet service to students,
researchers, and teachers. (Bashirs, Mahmood and Shafique, 2008)
In having on access in internet connection, we must know what are the advantages
and disadvantages of it especially to the HUMSS students. Although now a days,
internet connection is part of our daily life.
This aims to inform people especially HUMSS students about the advantage and
disadvantage of having an access in internet connection ad to know how does internet
connection help the HUMSS students to widen their knowledge and to improve their
achievements.
HYPOTHESIS
The null hypothesis is tested in the study.
(1) There is no significant difference in the academic performance of the students with
internet access and those without internet access.
(2) There is no association between education of the students and usage of internet.
For the Researchers. This study will help the researchers to broaden their knowledge
about the advantages and disadvantages of having an access in internet connection to
all HUMSS Students.
For the Future Researchers. This study will serve as a useful reference especially
those who will conduct related study and also this study will help them to provide
additional information.
For the Students. This study will help them to know the advantages and disadvantages
of having an access in internet connection to all HUMSS Students.

Chapter Overview
This chapter represents the literature and studies will be direct to the
present study. This study produced the background of the study on how some students
will know the advantages and disadvantages of having an access in internet connection
to all HUMSS students.
HISTORY
The Internet has become an important part of many people’s lives. In fact, so
many of us have become so accustomed to high speed Internet connections that we
often forget the days of struggling to get a solid 14.4 kbps connection over our
telephone lines. And for younger people, those days never existed. They always had
access to DSL, cable, and satellite as well as mobile devices that are even faster and
more capable than entire computers were decades ago.
The internet was established in the early 1960’s and subsequently became a
mainstream communication vehicle ( Moschovitis, Polle, Schyller & Senft 1999;
Schneider, et al., 2006). Since that time, there has been remarkable growth in the
internet’s functionality, capacity, accessibility, and convenience. These improvements
have encouraged more people to use it more often, and it has more become powerful
application in the modern. As of 2010, 28.7% of the world’s population used internet
services (Internet World Stats, 2016).
CONCEPTUAL LITERATURE
Internet use is spreading rapidly into daily life, and directly affecting
people’s ideas and behavior. Internet has an impact in many areas including the higher
education system. Internet heralded the development and implementation of new and
innovative teaching strategies in higher education institutions. Educators who advocate
technology integration in the learning process believe it will improve learning and
prepare students to effectively participate in the 21st century workplace. Internet use
has become a way of life for the majority of higher education students all around the
world. For most students the Internet is a functional tool, one that has greatly changed
the way they interact with others and with information as they go about their studies.
They use computers to accomplish a wide range of academic tasks. Many students
prepare course assignments, make study notes, tutor themselves with specialized
multimedia, and process data for research projects. Most exchange emails with faculty,
peers, and remote experts. They keep up to-date in their fields on the Internet,
accessing newsgroups, bulletin boards, list serves, and web sites posted by
professional organizations. Most access library catalogs, bibliographic databases, and
other academic resources in text, graphics, and imagery on the World Wide Web (Asan
& Koca, 2006). Usun (2003) mentioned that Internet is appealing to higher education for
a number of reasons: it reduces the time lag between the production and utilization of
knowledge; it promotes international co-operation and exchange of opinions; it furthers
the sharing of information; and it promotes multidisciplinary research.
Social Networking nowadays was a huge influence among the internet system. For
some people, computers are considered vital on a daily basis. This had cause to many
people become computer addicts to this great service. Now, we see almost in every
social places providing Wi-Fi service. Also, with all the great technology now days we
no longer have to carry a laptop to places to use the internet, phones have immense
technology access. Currently, people can use their phones to update their social page.
Also people who have some level of social addiction like or find pretty interesting and
getting to know everything about their friends through the monitors of their computers
and cell phones. Hanging out with friends was not often considered by teens. Many
people became addicted to social networks due to the fact that it is very popular among
not only young people but adult people too. It is also an easy access to communicate,
and it is entertaining. Although, its important purpose to people is to keep in touch with
their family, friends, and old friends that one may have lost touch with. Addiction to
these internet websites became a problem once it starts to affect their daily life.
According to Pamaoukaghion (2055-2010) Social Network Addiction was first known as
a psychological disorder around the world, also internet addiction lead to social network
addiction.
RELATED LITERATURE
The most important need of people since the ancient times has always been
communication. As the days went by many forms of communication have been
developed. The motivation behind each new form of communication was basically either
to make it possible for more data or information to be sent by increasing the data rate,
to enhance the transmission accuracy, or to increase the transmission distance
between different relay stations.
Internationally, there are many surveys on the use of the Internet, and nearly
all find that Internet use is most prevalent among younger, more educated people.
According to the UCLA Internet study (2001) reported that users spent about
9.8 hours a week on the Internet. The primary reason for going online was to obtain
information quickly, for work, and access to e-mail. Sending and receiving e-mail is the
most common Internet activity among children.
According to Pew Research Center (2001), 20% teens used instant message
as a way of contacting friends. Through e-mail and instant messages, teens extend their
relationship with friends outside of school. However, when it comes to the Internet,
several studies reported that older children use the Internet more than younger children.
According to Pew Research Center Internet project (2001), 17 older teens were likely to
use the Internet more than younger teens. According to Pew Research Center project
(2000a), ‘Internet veterans,’ or those who have used the Internet for more than three
years are more likely younger and more educated. Also, Internet veterans do more
things; use the Internet more frequently and longer. This study also reported that
Internet use patterns seemed to change over time from fun, to information seeking, to
more important things like job searching, to more difficult things like online banking and
shopping. The UCLA Internet study (2001) also confirmed that very experienced
Internet users (five or more years on the Internet) used the Internet for e-mail,
professional work, reading news or trading stocks, whereas people who had experience
with the Internet less than one year reported that they spent a large portion of time
online surfing the web, playing games, or chatting. Another study by Pew research
center (2001) indicated that teens with years of online experience were more likely use
the Internet more. A Stanford study (2000) also reported that the amount of experience
with the Internet was positively related to the amount of hours on the Internet and the
number of online activities that people engaged in. the Pew Internet & American Life
project (2001) reported that about 83% of teenagers aged 12 to 17 logged online from
home, even though most teens said they access the Internet from multiple locations,
such as, school, library, Internet café and friend’s home. Gumpert and Drucker (1998)
claimed that home environment after the introduction of a new technology or a new
media development was very important because this space could be influenced by the
changes in societal and communication ways. They argued that the new domestic
technologies could affect social interaction in the home environment in two ways:
facilitate the interaction or substitute for the interaction between people. Especially for
children, the home media environment may be a crucial factor in predicting children’s
media use. Since children less than 18 years old are still in the developmental stage in
general, their media use may need guidance and mediation from adults. Whether
children use the Internet in a separate place where mediation by adults is not easy
should not be overlooked when studying children’s 19 general Internet use. Thus, the
ownership of a personal computer or Internet access would be an important factor in
predicting children’s Internet use. Irving defined “digital divide” as a concept that
represents the inequality of Internet access regarding social, economic and geographic
level. DiMaggio redefined the digital divide as “digital inequality.”(University of Maryland,
2001). Also, DiMaggio et al. (2001) defined the “digital divide” as “inequalities in access
to the Internet, extent of use, knowledge of search strategies, quality of technological
connections and social support, ability to evaluate the quality of information, and
diversity of uses.” When we suppose that the Internet might play an important role in
children’s development and future success generally, Internet connectivity would be an
essential factor.
Social networks gave a big help to everyone, especially among the students
businessman and other members of the society. Social networks has different features
that may enjoy by the people all around the world, what the problem is, people loses
their self-control in using them. Facebook is the most popular social networking site
today wherein people may share and upload videos, pictures, messages and chat.
Twitter is also famous to every people nowadays wherein people can share their
feelings, thoughts and ideas.
CHAPTER III
This chapter will indicate the research design that was used, the location
of the study, the respondents needed for the data collection procedure, the research
instrument used, and data collecting procedure.
TABLE
The Respondents
It is reflected in Table 1 the number of respondents of this study who are the
HUMSS students in St. Augustine School of Nursing.
It this section, it could be seen that there are males than makes who’s been a
part of the sample.
The questionnaire had questions that relates to the study and these
questions were answered consequently.
Research Designs
The respondents of the study were 100 students in senior high school from
St. Augustine School of Nursing. All the students were selected through random
sampling. This sampling method is conducted where each member of a population has
an equal opportunity to become part of the sample. As all members of the population
have an equal chance of becoming a research participant, this is said to be the most
efficient sampling procedure.
In the table, it clearly knows that in question no.2; the question has the highest
answers of moderately agree with a mean of 3.27 followed by question no.5 with a
mean of 3.16, then followed by question no.2 with a mean of 3.13. In addition, in
question no.10, it has highest answers of agree with a mean 2.31, followed by question
no.6 with a mean of 2.09 and question 8 with a mean of 1.77. Lastly, question no.1 has
the highest answers of strongly agree with a mean of 3.84, followed by question no.7
with a mean 3.62, question no.4 with a mean 3.54 and question 9 with a mean 3.51.
The main research tool used in the study was a test questionnaire. The test
instruments were subjected to validity and reliability test. Mr. Lester M. Carandang, our
subject teacher validated the instrument by using his validation criteria. Test items
which failed to meet the above criteria were removed and changed.
