DP- Decision Making Sheet

http://changingminds.org/explanations/theories/a_decision.htm

Pick three of the philosophy theories around decision making: Describe them in your own words
in two sentences

1. Ambiguity Effect
People feel better when doing things they know the possible outcomes rather than something
were they dont

2. Mere Exposure Theory

The more you do or are exposed to something the more you like it

3. Source Credibility
People are more likely to listen to someone who is seen as credible like an expert or someone
who is trustworthy but this can also include people who are good looking or just really likeable

Give three real world examples from your life that you could have or have used each decision
making process, explain which process you picked and why.

1. In games I like to buy specific items rather than mystery boxes. I picked the Ambiguity Effect
because it is the first one in the list above

2. Since I have been going to my jiu jitsu group every i have started to like it more. I picked
Mere Exposure Theory because it is the second one in the list above

3. When I watch a video on the d&d beyond youtube channel or read an article on their website,
I know I can trust the information because them and/or their guests are experts in what their
talking about. I picked Source Credibility because it is the third one in the list above

Give three different real world examples from your future life in which you could use
each decision making process, explain which process you picked and why.

Scenario:

You have a job at Quarterstaff! And your own apartment!

You are paid $12/hour and work 25hrs/week. Money is tight but you are making it work
for now.
You are offered a manager position…
The manager position requires at least 40hrs/week. You would be in charge of covering
people's shifts if they call out sick or can’t come to work. You may have to work
weekends. You would get a $9,000 raise.

Choose 3 different decision making process/theories and describe how they would play
out or apply to this specific situation:

1. Ambiguity Effect
You would keep your current job because you already know about it

2.Optimism Bias
You take the new job because you think you will succeed

3. Perceptual Contrast Effect

You would compare the two and choose the best one for you

Finally using the ABCDE method, discuss one of the problems listed above and go
through each step with one sentence each:

Assess:
What is the root of the decision, simplified?
Whether to Take job or not

Is $9,000 worth working harder for more hours?

No it is not

Brainstorm:
Are there out-of-the-box alternative solutions?

For example, if you simply need more money, could you bump up your hours to 30 or 35
per week instead of being a manager? Would you prefer this if so? What if you ask and
 o?
they say n

None that would work for me

Consequences:
What are the pros and cons of each job.
If you keep your current job, what would the “consequences” be?
You get Less money

If you take the manager job, what would the “consequences” be?
you have to Work more

Do either of the “consequences” sound worse to you?

No they are the same for me

Decide:
Dive in!! Pick one!!
I would keep my current job

Evaluate:
How do you feel about your decision?? Regret? Excitement? Find any kinks you want to
work out before stepping into this decision full throttle! Do you want to negotiate salary?
Time off? Go for it! Congratulations!
I feel good about my decision
