Introduction to Communication

Lesson 1: Definition and Nature of Communication

Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students are to:

1. define communication
2. describe some characteristics of communication
3. identify the components of communication.
4. explain the essence of studying communication
5. discuss the importance of communication.

What is Communication?

Communication has been defined in several ways. Each definition may either broaden or narrow the concept of communication.
However, for purposes of expediency, this article will use a simple definition to set-up a broader understanding of communication.

Communication is a process of exchanging meanings between individuals, known as interlocutors, through shared system of
symbols, signs, or behavior. As a process, it involves a series of actions that leads to an exchange of meanings between individuals. If
communication is a process, then communication has components that constitute the whole process, and its end goal is to convey an
understandable message.

A definition of communication may not be enough to result to deeper appreciation of such activity. To explain communication in a
deeper sense, a look at its characteristics is necessary.

The 5 Axioms of Communication

Communication has been a subject of many researches, the results of which provide different characteristics and features of
communication. The discussion of these different characteristics of communication can be encapsulated by the 5 axioms of
communication. According to Gamble & Gamble (200) the 5 axioms of communications are statement about communication which are
considered and accepted to be self-evident.

1. Axiom No. 1: One cannot not communicate

Why Communicate?

Communication plays a very important role in any social activity. In both the professional and private life of an individual,
communication is a major activity.
